Hudson tried to de-escalate, but Jade cut him off.

“You’re a family. I’m not.” Jade reached out, untying her apron and tossing it into the mess on the floor.

She turned to walk away.

Hudson stood paralyzed, watching her retreating back.

He signaled to the security guards in the hallway. They swarmed into the room, surrounding Jade in a wall of muscle.

malice.

“Did you think you could just trash my home and walk away?”

He signaled again. Two guards seized Jade’s shoulders.

Bert loomed over her, his voice a low, threatening hiss.

“You thought you were a player in this game? Let me show you what the Walter name really means in this city. I can keep you locked in this house for a decade and not a soul will ask a single question!”

Hudson stayed silent. He didn’t agree with the tactics, but he didn’t stop them.

Jade needed to cool off. She was being irrational.

If Bert taught her a lesson now, it would be easier for him to bring her home later once she was “humbled.”

The Walters went pale.

Bert’s composure fractured. “Who the hell are you people?”

The guards formed a corridor. A tall, powerful figure stepped through the doors, radiating a heavy, suffocating authority.

Bastian walked into the center of the room, his blue-gray eyes scanning the wreckage before locking onto the guards holding Jade.

“I dare you to touch her again.”

His operatives moved instantly, disarming the Walter guards and pulling Jade to Bastian’s side.

Bastian checked her over, ensuring she wasn’t hurt. Only then did the ice in his gaze begin to thaw.

Bert had been studying Bastian. Seeing the man’s aura, he moderated his tone.

“Sir, this is a private family matter. I suggest you stay out of it.”

“Family matter?” Bastian’s voice was a chilling rasp.

“Jade belongs with me now. She has nothing to do with the Walters.”

Hudson’s heart stopped. Bert’s face turned a bruised shade of purple.

“The Walter name carries weight in this city, young man. Are you really going to start a war over a girl?”

“Weight?” Bastian let out a short, mocking laugh.

“The Walters are old money in a small pond. But using that ‘weight’ to bully a girl? You’re a disgrace to your own name.”

Bert’s gaze flickered between Jade and Bastian, his face turning a mottled grey.

Realizing he had zero leverage, he gestured to the ruins of the dinner.
