Chapter 46 The Ultimate Provocation
But at this point, she couldn’t afford to care about the consequences.
The knocking at the door persisted, sharp and demanding.
Jade’s knuckles whitened as she shoved herself off the mattress.
She marched to the door, drew a jagged breath, and yanked it open with a look of grim determination.

Rosa had been ready to snap, but seeing the look on Jade’s face, she swallowed her words and switched to a worried tone.
“Mrs. Walter, are you alright?”
Jade pressed her lips into a thin line, forcing her expression into something resembling calm.
“I’m fine. Has Emily brought that doctor? Let’s go down.”
Rosa knew Emily’s orders weren’t meant to be ignored. She nodded and led Jade downstairs.
Downstairs.
The second Jade appeared, Emily let out a sharp, derisive snort.
“You knew I was bringing a doctor today, yet you slept in. Who do you think you’re impressing with this attitude?”
“Mom.”
Hudson knit his brows, raising his coffee for a slow, measured sip.
“Let’s just eat. Save the lecturing for later.”
Emily always deferred to her son. She went quiet, and Jade didn’t offer a word either, picking the seat furthest from everyo eat in silence.
In this mansion, not a single soul looked at her with anything but disdain.
Why bother trying to fit in and inviting more misery?
Emily noticed Jade’s silent rebellion, and her temper flared again. She slammed her fork onto the mahogany table.
“Hudson, are you just going to let this slide?”
Hudson glanced at Jade from the corner of his eye. Seeing her head down, focused on her food, his heart softened a fraction.
“This is her home too. She can sit wherever she d’mn well pleases.”
That blatant indulgence made Amara’s grip on her fork tighten until her fingers turned white.
Emily looked stunned, her gaze darting between Jade and Hudson with an unreadable, suspicious intensity.
Hudson had never defended Jade before. Now that he finally had, Jade didn’t feel a hint of joy.

He was clearly doing this for show, proving to Emily that their marriage was solid so she’d report back to John and clear the way for
Amara.
Hudson was certainly pulling out all the stops to keep Amara and her brat around, using every tool at his disposal.
Ten minutes later, breakfast was finished.
Emily beckoned the doctor over, gesturing for him to examine Jade.
Jade’s voice was cold and decisive.
“I’m not doing it!”
Emily stared at her, her eyes widening in pure disbelief.
“What did you just say?”
“I said I won’t do it.” Jade shifted her icy gaze to Hudson.
“Having a child takes two people. For three years, I’ve seen countless doctors and swallowed enough bitter tonics to fill a pool. Every doctor who checked my body said I was perfectly healthy. Maybe the problem isn’t with me at all?”
Emily’s face turned a bruised shade of purple.
“What exactly are you implying?”
Jade didn’t blink as she spoke the truth.
“Maybe the one with the defect isn’t me-it’s your son. Why don’t you have the doctor check him? What if he’s the one who’s impotent-”
“Jade!”
Hudson cut her off, his voice a low growl through clenched teeth.
“I have a full physical every year. I’m fine.”
Jade discreetly wiped the cold sweat from her palms onto the fabric of her skirt.
“And you think I don’t have checkups?”
She paused for a second, then looked Emily straight in the eye.
“Regardless, I’m healthy. If someone needs a checkup, it’s Hudson!”
“You… you insolent…”
Emily was so livid her words failed her, her chest heaving with every ragged breath.
Amara’s eyes flickered with a hidden agenda as she rushed over to steady Emily.
“Emily, please, just breathe. Don’t let her get to you.”
Emily clutched at her chest, her glare at Jade sharp enough to draw blood.
