Chapter 53 A Sick Joke
Just as Jade’s guard dropped for a split second, Hudson suddenly lunged back, pinning her wrist.
“AH-”
The pain was electric. Jade’s grip failed, and the scissors clattered onto the hardwood floor.

She lunged to retrieve them, but Hudson was faster, his hand locking around her throat and slamming her against the wall.
“Are you finished being hysterical?”
Jade’s back hit the cold wall with a sickening thud. A muffled groan escaped her, but she didn’t beg. She stared at Hudson with bloodshot, defiant eyes.
Hudson’s fingers tightened around her slender neck, cutting off her breath.
“Jade, answer me. Are you done?”
The world began to blur as the oxygen in her lungs vanished. She didn’t struggle. Her eyes were like shards of ice.
“I hurt your precious little mistress, so now you’re going to kill me, right?”
A single tear fell from her eye onto Hudson’s hand. He flinched as if it were acid and immediately let go. Staring at the dark blue bruises already forming on her throat, he tried to explain.
“Jade, I just needed you to calm down.”
“Cough… cough…”
Air rushed back into her lungs, and Jade doubled over, coughing violently.
Hudson reached out to help her, but she slapped his hand away with pure hatred.
When the fire in her throat finally subsided, Jade looked up at him, her gaze dead and cold.
‘Listen to me, Hudson. Even if it’s the last thing I do, I’m getting this divorce. I am done being your pawn.”
Jade walked out, her coughing fading down the hall. The room fell into a tomb-like silence.
Hudson’s face was a mask of cold fury. After ten seconds of silence, he looked at Amara on the bed and spoke in a voice like gravel.
‘Amara, why are you in this bed? And why are you in Jade’s pajamas?”
Amara sobbed, shaking her head frantically.
‘I… I don’t know. I must have blacked out from the wine. I thought… I thought this was my room, so I… I just…”
Hudson’s gaze drifted to the half-empty bottle on the table. It was strong stuff. Even he had been compromised, so Amara’s story wasn’t impossible.
He pinched the bridge of his nose, the exhaustion finally catching up to him.

“Forget it. Don’t say another word. Go back to your room.”
Amara wiped her eyes. “What about Jade?”
“I’ll deal with her.” Hudson waved her away, his patience entirely depleted.
Amara sniffled as she gathered herself.
“Then I’ll go.”

Hudson sat on the edge of the bed, looking at the wreckage of the room. For the first time, he felt as if his life was spiraling out of his control.
Especially when it came to Jade…
–
Inside the guest bathroom.
Jade braced herself against the sink, a dull, pulsing ache throbbing in her lower abdomen.
The adrenaline had masked it before, but now she felt the true cost of her outburst-the pregnancy was at risk.
Not just her belly, but her heart, her neck…
Every inch of her was a map of pain.
Jade looked up at her reflection, horrified by the wreck staring back.
Hair matted, eyes swollen, skin like parchment. She looked like a ghost, a madwoman, exactly as Hudson described.
And then there was the most damning mark-the purple ring around her throat.
The moment his hand had closed there, she’d felt it. He really could have killed her.
Because she’d dared to touch the woman he loved, he’d been ready to end her life.
“Ha… ha…”
Jade tipped her head back and laughed, but only tears came out.
She was laughing at her own pathetic life, at the three years she’d wasted.
She had given Hudson everything, played the role of the perfect Mrs. Walter to extreme.
And in exchange, he’d tried to choke her to death for his mistress?
What a joke.
A sick, miserable joke.
Jade slid down the wall until she hit the cold tiles. She buried her face in her knees and let the tears drown her.
Cry, then. Cry until there’s nothing left.
