“A month before your birthday, you went on that business trip. The person on the other end of those late-night calls wasn’t a friend. It was Amara, wasn’t it?

‘And on your birthday, you lied and said you were stuck at the office. But you were actually at the Mingler Club with all your riends, celebrating with her and her daughter.”

She would never forget that night-coming home from the club, sitting in the dark, cavernous villa, waiting for a husband who was busy playing family with someone else. The memory still felt like a physical blow.

Jade’s resolve crumbled, and the tears began to fall again. She wiped them away aggressively as she spoke.

I spent all day baking your favorite cake and cooking your favorite meal. You blew me off with a text about overtime, while you vere surrounded by flowers and balloons at the Mingler Club. It looked so perfect, Hudson. Everyone there must have thought you vere a beautiful family of three.”

Hudson’s brow furrowed even deeper, though his voice remained steady.

‘I don’t know who told you about the Mingler Club, but the only reason I didn’t tell you was to avoid drama. It wasn’t about eeping secrets.”

‘Isn’t that enough?”

lade gave a self-deprecating laugh.

‘You lied to me. You didn’t care about my feelings. What is there left to explain?”

Meeting her icy stare, Hudson felt a sudden, inexplicable surge of panic. He reached out and grabbed her wrist.

‘If this is about me not spending my birthday with you, then I’ll—”

‘Don’t bother.”

Jade cut him off, prying his fingers from her wrist with cold efficiency.

‘You’ve told so many lies that I don’t believe a single word that comes out of your mouth anymore.”

Jade-”

Hudson reached for her again, but she stepped back, maintaining a careful distance between them.

“And it’s more than that. I heard Cortney call you ‘Daddy’ over the phone that night. You three sounded so happy. Did you think about me for even one second? Did I even cross your mind?”

She didn’t wait for his answer. She already knew it.

“Of course you didn’t. If I mattered, you never would have done it.”

She rested a hand over her abdomen, a shadow of a smile on her lips.

“You let Amara move into our house. You let her kid call you ‘Daddy! And I’m just ‘Ms. Merchant’ to everyone else. Tell me, Hudson -if I ever had a child, would they just be another bastard in your eyes?”

Her words were like lead weights dropping on Hudson’s chest, making it impossible to breathe.

He irritably ripped open the top buttons of his shirt, trying to ease the sudden, suffocating pressure in his lungs.

He paced in a tight circle, then yanked his tie off and threw it aside. Finally, he looked at her.

“Jade, I admit I handled the situation with Amara and the kid poorly. But I only brought them in because they were alone. There is nothing going on between us. We are clean!”

“It doesn’t matter.”

Jade took another two steps back, reaching the shadow of the temple eaves.

She was inside the darkness; Hudson was in the light.

It was a line in the sand, a boundary that could never be crossed again.

Jade’s eyes, which once held nothing but adoration for him, were now a hollow, empty void.

“Hudson, I spent three years trying to earn a place in your heart, and I failed. I’m done being the fool.”

She let out a long, weary sigh, her voice finally reaching a point of absolute calm.

“You don’t love me. It’s that simple. Now that the woman you actually care about is back, let’s just stop the charade. Let’s divorce and walk away with some dignity.”
