Hudson leaned his head back against the sofa.
“What am I supposed to do?”

Charles said, “It’s simple. Move Amara and the kid out. The root of the problem is her living in your house. Fix that, and everything else follows.”
“I can’t,” Hudson said without a second of hesitation.
“Ronald’s death was suspicious. If I move Amara out now, she’s a target. I won’t do it.”
Charles looked at him with pure exasperation.
“If you’re so worried about her safety, hire ten bodyguards to watch her twenty-four-seven! Moving her into your house doesn’t stop an assassin. What, are you planning to jump in front of a bullet for her personally?”
Hudson’s brows pulled together in a sharp scowl.
“Charles, Amara is your friend too. Why are you acting like you want her dead?”
Charles sighed. “I’m not the one trying to dodge the issue. Do you want Amara in your house, or do you want your wife back? Pick one.”
“I shouldn’t have to choose,” Hudson muttered, lighting a cigarette.
“Just give it time. I’ll find a way to make everyone coexist.” D
Monday.
Jade waited until she knew Hudson would be at the office before heading to the villa.
The moment she stepped inside, she felt like a stranger in her own home.
The living room was overflowing with toys. Her carefully curated decorations were gone, replaced by Amara’s cheap taste. Even the wedding portraits had been taken down.

sanctuary.
She had dreamed of a long, happy life with Hudson here.
She never imagined that the life she’d built with such care could be replaced this effortlessly.
“Jade?”
Amara walked into the room from the garden.
“Have you eaten? Rosa isn’t here, but I can whip something up for you.”
She spoke with the easy confidence of the woman of the house.
Jade ignored the blatant smugness in Amara’s eyes and walked straight toward the stairs.
Amara’s face hardened. She watched Jade’s back for a moment before turning back toward the kitchen.
Jade reached the base of the stairs. As she moved to take the first step, a high-pitched whirring sound filled the air.
Beep, beep, beep-
“Aunt Jade, look out! Get out of the way!”
Jade turned to see Cortney racing toward her in a motorized toy car.
Before she could even process the danger, the car slammed into her shins.
Bang-
The impact made Jade’s knees buckle.
She reached out to steady herself, but in the next second, Cortney’s head collided squarely with her abdomen.
A searing, white-hot pain tore through Jade. On pure instinct, she pushed Cortney away.
The girl toppled sideways off the toy car.
