“Lana…”
The moment Niamh saw her, her eyes lit up. Lana was holding a cake box, and Niamh knew instantly that it was for her—a peace offering.
“How long have you been waiting? You should have found a seat!” Niamh said, ushering Lana into her office.
It was Lana’s first time inside the general manager’s office. It was spacious, and her gaze immediately fell on the laptop sitting on the large desk.
“Nia, I’m so sorry about before. I was wrong, I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions…” Lana apologized awkwardly as she took the cake out of the box. “I… I baked this for you myself. Would you… like to try it?”
Niamh was taken aback. She hadn’t expected Lana to be so shy and polite with her.
“What are you talking about, Lana? Of course I want to try a cake you baked just for me!”
“That’s good…” Lana managed a smile, but the corners of her mouth felt stiff.
“Oh, sorry, Nia. It’s such a big cake… I forgot to bring a knife or any plates…”
“No problem, I’ll get them.” Niamh reached for the intercom instinctively. But since her assistant, Jonathan, had taken an unapproved day off, she decided to call Prescott instead.
According to Jarrett, The Thomas Group’s newly launched FZZL system had hidden vulnerabilities. The program on his drive was designed to shut the system down completely. That way, while Niamh would suffer a financial loss, patients using the FZZL system wouldn’t be at risk of misdiagnosis or incorrect treatment.
The computer finished booting. Just before inserting the drive, Lana hesitated for a moment. She knew what she was doing was a betrayal to Niamh. But in her mind, Niamh was the one who had been in the wrong first. No matter how much profit was at stake, you didn’t push a system with known flaws onto the market, especially not a medical system where lives were on the line. It was just like those news stories about pharmaceutical companies that deliberately hid adverse patient outcomes in trials to rush unsafe new drugs to market.
“I’m doing this… for Nia’s own good…” Lana clenched her jaw and inserted the USB drive into Niamh’s laptop.
The next second, an alarm blared through the entire office. Lana froze, stunned and overwhelmed by the deafening sound.
