Her words were a wake-up call. To do business with the wealthy, connections are everything. Without a network, you have nothing.
It seems pregnancy brain is real; I can't believe I didn't grasp such a simple concept at first.
I looked down at my belly, hoping that my child would inherit Steven’s head for business, but with less of his manipulative side.
Tess gently pulled the blanket up higher. “Ma’am, can I ask you a question?”
I nodded. “Go ahead.”
Tess asked cautiously, “Did you and Mr. Lancaster have a fight? While you were on the IV drip, Mr. Lancaster sat right here with you, looking heartbroken. He left after a while because he was afraid you’d be upset when you woke up.”
I scoffed internally. In my past life, when I lost our child and sought comfort from him, he watched me suffer with guilt and sorrow, all while pretending he knew nothing. And then he got together with Verna.
If he had cared about me even a little, he wouldn't have just stood by and watched me self-destruct.
Seeing my silence, Tess continued to persuade me. “Ma’am, please forgive Mr. Lancaster just this once. Let’s move back to the estate, shall we?”
Forgive him?
Not in this lifetime.
My expression hardened, and my voice turned to ice. “I am never going back! And I will have nothing more to do with Steven. If you want to go back to the estate, you can go by yourself!”
Tess was taken aback. Seeing the gravity of the situation in my serious expression, she quickly clarified, “Ma’am, I’ll do whatever you say. If you say we’re not going back, then we won’t.”
