Hanging up the phone, I let out a long sigh.
Maybe going abroad would help me forget all the unhappiness here.
Over the past couple of days, Rachel had sent me a flood of messages. I glanced at them briefly; they were all just tirades condemning me.
I deleted them without replying, refusing to torture myself over these people and their drama any longer.
I spent two days online, researching precautions for pregnant women and taking detailed notes.
Before, Tess and Steven had worried about all this for me, so I never had to give it a second thought. Plus, with the constant drowsiness of my first trimester, I hadn't had the energy to focus on it. But now, about to travel abroad alone, I had to rely on myself for everything.
Keeping busy filled my days and kept my mind from wandering into dark places.
To avoid Steven, I hadn't left the apartment in days. He was always right outside, either waiting in his car or standing by the curb.
On the day of my prenatal check-up, I got ready and went downstairs just after six, assuming he'd be asleep in his car at that hour. But as soon as I walked out of the main entrance, Steven got out of his car and strode toward me.
I glanced at him and felt a jolt of surprise. It had only been a little over a week, but his face was pale and his eyes had lost their usual spark, making him look utterly exhausted and worn down.
I tore my gaze away and walked toward the car waiting for me. But Steven stepped in front of me, blocking my path. His voice was low and raspy. “Zephyra, can we please talk?”
I shot him a cold look. “There's nothing for us to talk about.”
