After a satisfying meal, Edward put down his utensils and looked at Catherine. “Is Isabella feeling any better?”
Catherine shook her head. “Mr. Carrick has been monitoring her temperature. He gave her a shot to bring the fever down, but it doesn't seem to be working. It keeps coming back.”
Edward frowned. “This can't go on.”
The original plan was to send Isabella to the villa in the countryside today.
Now, his in-laws had gotten involved.
If Isabella didn’t get better, his in-laws would worry, and it would be troublesome if their health suffered because of it.
Catherine sighed. “Mr. Carrick said it might be psychological.”
After all, Isabella had always been doted on and cherished in the Lancaster family.
Now that Serena was back, all their attention was naturally focused on her.
Although Catherine still treated Isabella the same, for Isabella herself…
She probably couldn't accept the sudden shift and had buried all her emotions deep inside.
Once buried, those feelings piled up with no outlet.
Her body gave out, leaving her listless and unable to recover.
Edward's frown deepened. “What does she have to be sick about? She is our adopted daughter, and we adopted her in the hopes of doing a good deed that would lead us to our own daughter sooner. She should be well aware of that.”
“Besides, even with Serena back, no one has mistreated her. We still treat her the same as before. What more does she have to be dissatisfied about?”
Catherine patted her husband’s arm. “That child, Isabella, has always been competitive and likes to be the best at everything. She tends to get stuck in her own head…”
She sighed again. “Since Mom and Dad miss Isabella, let’s have her stay with them for a while in a few days. She can keep them company and have some time to herself to think things through.”
“I suppose that’s the only way.” Edward turned to Serena, his eyes full of sympathy. “Serena, I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this.”
