“What?!”

I shot to my feet and stared at my brother. “You’re saying you want to take Laila as your mate and make her queen?”

Griffin roared inside my blood. His fangs nearly tore through my skin. “She’s ours!”

“Why such a big reaction? Isn’t this normal?”

Vaughn lifted his eyes. His dark blue gaze was cold. “She’s the only bloodline left of the Conlays. She owns the rich lands of Silvermoon Pack and holds the right to inherit the duke title. And now she has great military achievements. Do you know how many males out there are eyeing her?”

He leaned forward, releasing a wave of Alpha pressure. “Females are emotional. They make irrational choices. If some enemy or some shady guy tricks her, who knows who she’ll attack? Keeping her by my side and marking her as mine is the safest choice for the kingdom and for her pack.”

“You’re insulting her!”

The hair on the back of my neck almost stood up. “Laila isn’t a she-wolf that can be manipulated! She’s an Alpha! Her will is harder than the frozen tundra in the north! I’d bet my life and my honor on her loyalty!”

“Your honor?”

Vaughn let out a cold laugh. “Even brothers turn on each other for a throne, Samuel. You can’t guarantee anything for an outsider.”

I clenched my fists until my knuckles turned white.

“I know her.

“I’ve seen her on the battlefield. I’ve seen the look in her eyes when she protects our land.”

I forced myself to breathe slower, but my voice was still tight. “Your Majesty, have you even asked what she wants? Ask her if she wants to be locked in a golden cage, smelling perfume and political schemes all day? If you’re worried about her influence, you can choose a loyal mate for her in the royal family’s name-”

“Choose who?” Vaughn cut me off. “An ordinary Alpha soldier isn’t good enough for her. If she marries into Blackrock Pack or Frostfang Pack, she’ll create an alliance strong enough to challenge my throne. I just secured my crown, Samuel. I won’t take that risk.”

“But the army lacks top young generals. If you make her queen, you’ll let a blade rust.”

“She can still lead troops as queen.” Vaughn leaned back on the throne. His posture relaxed, but his tone left no room for argument. “I want a mate, not a prisoner. Her claws can still tear out our enemies’ throats.”

I looked at him and suddenly felt like I didn’t know him at all.

Griffin let out a low, painful growl inside me.

“She won’t agree,” I said, standing straight like a spear. “And it’s not fair.”

“Not fair?” Vaughn raised an eyebrow. “In the entire Rydar Kingdom, is there any other male worthy of her besides me?”

“Yes!”

The words burst out faster and louder than I meant.

I quickly added, trying to cover it up, “But… she just escaped a disastrous mate bond. Her wolf spirit needs time to heal. She needs time to learn to trust again. This isn’t conquering territory, Vaughn. You can’t take her the way you take a hill in battle.”

“Oh?”

Vaughn stood up. His tall frame cast a shadow over me.

His eyes gleamed in the dark like a predator’s.

“So how should I treat her? With the same ‘mercy’ you show prisoners of war?”

“She’s not the enemy!”

My shout echoed off the stone walls. “The Conlays were almost wiped out! She carried blood vengeance and helped this kingdom reclaim territory. She won Vagen for us! And now you want to use your power to force her? Just because you’re ‘worried’ about what might happen?”

Silence fell heavy between us.

The only sound was the crackling of the fire in the hearth.
