“Dead serious,” Morgana said, resting her chin on her hand like she was just talking about the weather. “Vaughn picked you himself. I’m just the messenger.”

I couldn’t believe it.

Last time we met, he called me a hopeless romantic with nothing else in my brain. Now he wanted to form a mate with me?

“Guess we’re just that charming,” Nita said proudly in my head, practically humming.

I ignored her and looked down. “I’m honored, Your Highness. But honestly, I don’t think I’m a good match for the King.”

“How are you not a good match?” Morgana tilted her head, like I was playing dumb.

“You’re General Conlay’s daughter. You’re an Alpha she-wolf. You fought in the Battle of Vagen. If you’re not good enough, who else in this kingdom is supposed to stand next to my brother?”

She even smiled, but it had a sharp edge to it, like she thought I was just playing hard to get.

I still shook my head. “There are many she-wolves more qualified than me.”

Morgana paused.

Her gray-blue eyes studied my face. Maybe this was the first time she’d seen someone turn down a queen’s crown.

“Fine,” she said at last, twirling a strand of her hair. “Message delivered. If you don’t want it, forget it.”

“Thank you for understanding.”

I meant it. I even turned down her polite offer to stay for a meal and left faster than I came.

When I reached the gates of the Royal Court, I ran into Samuel.

He looked like he was waiting for someone.

When he heard my footsteps, he turned and looked at me.

“Good morning, Your Highness,” I said with a bright smile. “Goodbye, Your Highness.”

After I said that, I walked past him and quickly stepped out through the archway.
