Samuel wasn’t dressed in his usual torn, blood-stained armor. Instead, he wore a perfectly fitted dark-green hunting outfit for nobles, with a charcoal formal coat embroidered with his family crest.
A deep gold sash crossed his shoulder. A star-shaped royal medal shone on his chest beside a wolf-fang chain.
His short hair was neatly slicked back. In the morning light, his ash-gray eyes looked even deeper. The Alpha aura around him felt strong and commanding. And today, there was something solemn about it.
It was way too formal.
If I didn’t know better, I’d think he really came to propose.
I glanced at myself. I was only wearing a simple moon-white linen dress with vine embroidery at the hem, with a soft gray shawl.
It was tidy enough, but next to his full formal look, I seemed way too casual.
It was too late to change now.
I straightened up and saluted. “Greetings, Marshal Vance.”
Samuel nodded slightly. “General Conlay, please clear the room. I need to speak with you alone.”
The way he said it…
Definitely official business.

Thinking that, I turned serious as well. “Marshal Vance, is this about Vagen Battlefield—”
“No.” He cut me off at once. He took a deep breath, like he’d made up his mind. “I’m here about something personal. Not military.”
“Oh.” I blinked, confused.
Personal?
What personal matter would make him show up like that?
He looked straight at me. “His Majesty gave you three months to find a mate. If not, you’ll become Queen. Is that correct?”
“Yes.” I nodded. It wasn’t strange that he knew. He was King Vaughn’s brother after all.
“Do you want to be Queen?” he asked plainly.
I frowned. “Did His Majesty send you to ask?”
“No.” He held my gaze. “I want to know.”
Oh?
I slowly shook my head. “I don’t.”
His eyes stayed on me. “Is there a he-wolf you like right now?”
“No,” I answered firmly.
“Not even someone you’re a little interested in?”
“No.”
For just a second, his eyes seemed to dim.
My chest tightened. I asked without thinking, “Are you here to help me with this?”
At that, Samuel looked away.
For a while, I thought he was going to stay quiet, and I almost switched topics. Then he turned around and looked straight at me. His voice was calm but serious.
