“You’re right, Ms. Conlay! We did nothing wrong. Why wouldn’t we go?”

Pearl always supported Laila without hesitation. Hearing that, she immediately felt fired up.
Martha, however, started thinking it through. “If we attend, we need a gift. It’s too late to buy one now. I’ll check if we have something appropriate.”
She left right away.
Pearl finally calmed down a bit.
She clasped her hands, worry flashing in her eyes as she looked at Laila. “Ms. Conlay, if they say nasty things, don’t let it get to you.”
Laila smiled. “Silly girl, I don’t care about their opinions. Their words can’t hurt me.”
Only things she cared about could wound her. If she didn’t care, their insults were nothing more than wind passing over empty land.
Faulkner nodded quietly in agreement.
An hour later, Martha returned.
“There’s nothing truly fitting.”
She looked troubled. The pack’s vault had plenty of gold, jewels, and expensive gifts. But giving Estelle something lavish made no sense. There was no friendship between them—only grudges. Still, the gift couldn’t look cheap, or the nobles would mock them.
Laila rested her chin on her hand, thought for a moment, and then smiled softly. “No need to search anymore. We’ll send one of Shane’s discarded sketches.”
Her senior, Shane, was famous in the art world. His paintings were in high demand.
Here, though, his draft sketches piled up, especially the ones he called “failures.”
Even his discarded work showed skilled strokes and bold design. They just didn’t meet his strict standards.
Laila casually pulled a rolled sketch from an oak chest. She was about to sit when Pearl

suddenly blurted, “Huh?”

She pulled out a small stack of rough leather charms from the bottom of the chest and held them up. “Wow, Ms. Conlay, look at these charms. They’re weird!”
Before Laila could turn around, Martha quickly but gently took them from Pearl. “Put those back.”
Pearl blinked, as if she had just remembered something.
Laila had already walked over. She picked up one charm from Martha’s hand and examined it.
The leather braiding was uneven and loose. The hemlock chip in the center was carved badly, with stiff, messy lines. The attempt to copy the Silvermoon clan’s guardian totem looked clumsy and awkward. It was honestly hard to look at.
“That’s seriously ugly. Almost funny,” Nita commented in her mind.
“Yeah.” Laila had to admit it was terrible.
She turned and asked, “Where did these come from?”
Martha and Faulkner exchanged a look and smiled knowingly.
Laila froze. Then she dropped the charm as if it burned her. “Wait. I made these? No way, right?”
Martha laughed. “When you were little, you worried General Conlay was always at war and in danger. You wanted to learn charm-weaving to make him one. You kept begging until I taught
you.
After a month, you made this whole pile. Mrs. Conlay couldn’t bear to throw them away, so she stored them here.”
Laila was speechless.
She really had made them.
Looking at the crooked little charms, a strong sense of familiarity hit her.
Before she could grasp that memory, Luke entered, guided by a servant.
“Ms. Conlay, Prince Vance sent me to ask if you’ll attend Princess Estelle’s birthday banquet,” he said.
“Oh.”
