Chapter 135 How Dare You!
Third-person POV:
Elara’s shriek sent the room into a tailspin.
.:.
“What? A fake painting as a birthday gift? That’s pathetic…”

“Exactly—if you can’t afford a real one, don’t bother. You’re just embarrassing yourself.”
“But…
it doesn’t look fake to me. The light, the brushwork…”
Jenna’s gaze darted between Elara and the rose painting, her voice barely containing a thrill.
“You’re sure it’s fake?”
Elara nodded so hard her cheeks shook.
“Absolutely! At first glance, it looks right, but I’ve seen Shane’s authentic work at auction—his signature is always just a single wolf-head seal, never a full name!”
“Huh, now that you mention it…” A lady leaned in for a closer look. “She’s right-why is the full name ‘Shane Green’ written out? As if the painter was afraid nobody would know who did it.”
“Exactly! The master always uses a seal instead of a name-this is clearly the forger giving themselves away!”
“By the Moon-it really is a forgery!”
The whispers spread like wildfire across a dry plain.
Jenna’s cheeks flushed with excitement. She snatched the painting and grabbed both ends of the scroll-
“Laila! You had the nerve to give my mother a forgery?!”
Riiip-
The sound of the scroll tearing was like a living thing having its spine snapped.
Shreds fell from her fingers, drifting onto the red carpet, landing on the severed roses.
“If you can’t afford the real thing, don’t bother!” She lifted her chin. “Something this cheap doesn’t deserve to pass through Frostfang Pack’s gates!”

The hall went still.
:
Laila lowered her gaze to the shredded roses on the floor.
She didn’t speak right away.

After a moment, she looked up. Her eyes passed over Jenna and settled on Elara, who was shrinking back, trying to disappear into the crowd.
“Fake?”
Her voice was light-almost stripped of emotion.
“Do you think claiming that it’s fake means it’s really fake?”
Elara felt a chill race down her spine under that flat, even stare.
But the words were already out. All she could do was bluff.
“I-I’ve seen the real thing! Shane’s seal is clearly a wolf-head emblem, never a full-name signature-your painting has a full name on it. If that’s not a forgery, what is it?”
“You’ve seen the real thing,” Laila repeated it once, her tone still level.
“Then, did you notice-”
She paused.
“—that this was from his private collection, gifted to me personally?”
Elara blinked, then twisted her mouth into a nasty smirk, as if she’d just heard the joke of the
century.
“Gifted to you? Why on earth would Shane give you something this valuable? Don’t tell me … he’s in love with you?”
A few muffled snickers rippled through the crowd.
“Even if he were to give it away, it would go to your father, your brothers-that was the Conlays’ glory, not yours alone.” Elara was on a roll now. “That makes it General Conlay’s heirloom! How could you bear to give it away? And if you truly don’t mind parting with it, isn’t that disrespectful to your dead father?”
In Laila’s mind, Nita let out a deep, long-restrained snarl-

“I’m going to rip out her throat-
Laila didn’t respond to Nita.
”
:
She only lifted the corner of her mouth, just slightly.
