I just led Samuel through Silvermoon Pack’s market, turning at the end of the cobblestone street into the old restaurant I’d been eating at since I was a pup.

The carved wolf head over the door had been worn smooth by years of hands brushing past it. The young Omega lighting the lanterns spotted me, and his ears went straight up.

I picked a table by the window.

After sitting down, I flipped open the menu and looked up at him.

“Your Highness-can you do deer blood? Or do you prefer wild fowl?”

He sat with his back perfectly straight, looking as serious as if he were planning a siege.

“Deer blood. The rawer the better.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“What about the smoked kind? We do one marinated in juniper berries.”

“They brush it with lingonberry glaze while it’s roasting.”

“Fine.”

He hesitated.

I smiled and ended up ordering eight dishes-three were Silvermoon Pack’s own smoked and braised specialties, and the other five were all drenched in a thick, reddish-brown sauce of horseradish and juniper.

When I handed him the menu, he took it with ceremony, reading each line like he was inspecting troops.

Then, he looked up and nodded.

“Settled.”

While we waited for the food, I thought of Morgana blurting out the news about Samuel and me in front of the entire room-and the look of pure regret on her face afterward. I couldn’t help laughing.
