Chapter 154 If Those Pups Were Still Alive
Third-person POV:
After leaving the dining hall. Laila walked straight toward the pack’s sacred grove.
The sacred grove lay deep inside the pack’s territory. It was an ancient oak forest.
Tall stone monuments stood between the trees each carved with a name. This was where the pack honored its ancestors.
Under every stone rested the bones of a family member.
The deepest stones belonged to Kain. Diana, her eldest brother Marcus Conlay, her second sister-in-law Leah Conlay, her third brother Nicky Conlay, and her third sister-in-law Miriam Conlay.
Next to them stood several smaller stones in a row. Those belonged to her nephews and nieces.
Laila sat down in front of the line of stones.
The names carved into the stone had once been living, breathing people.
They used to fight over the last piece of meat a dinner. They used to sit around the fire on full moon nights and sing. They used to smile and call her “Aunt Laila” and “Laila.”
Now, they were nothing but cold stones.
She reached out and traced the name “Kain ‘Conlay.” Her fingers felt the rough lines carved into the surface.
“Dad,” she said softly, “Mr. Songler talked to me today about adopting a few children. He thinks we can let one of them inherit your dukedom in the future. But after looking at the list, I still can’t decide.”
The wind moved through the trees. The oak leaves rustled softly.
“Can you give me a sign? Should I do it?”
But there was no answer.
Laila lowered her head and pressed her palm against the cool stone.
Deep down, she knew she didn’t want to adopt anyone.
The Conlay dukedom hadn’t come easily. Kain and her brothers had paid for it with their lives. And now it would be handed to someone else’s child?
She couldn’t accept that.
“Ms. Conlay, this is from Ms. Stone.”
Laila opened it. There were several pages. Viola had written about fun things at Moonlight Academy, She talked about who got into a fight and was put in detention. She wrote about someone secretly raising a baby fox and getting caught by a mentor.
In the second half of the letter, Viola congratulated Laila on her marriage. She said their friends at Moonlight Academy were preparing a big wedding gift. The news had spread across the academy, and everyone was getting ready to celebrate her big day.
Halfway through reading, Laila suddenly remembered something.
If news of her marriage had spread at Moonlight Academy, that meant Samuel had truly arrived there.
But Viola never mentioned whether Samuel was still there.
Normally, delivering news to Moonlight Academy and coming back wouldn’t take more than ten days. But it had already been over a month, and he still hadn’t come back.
Had something happened to him?
Laila frowned and called out to Pearl. “Send someone to Frostwind Pack and see if there’s any news.”
