Chapter 159 We Leave Now

Laila’s POV:

I didn’t say anything. I just stood there and let Woodrow keep talking.

“When Prince Vance heard that, he got furious,” Woodrow said. “He demanded to know why the chief couldn’t catch the people behind it.

“The chief couldn’t hide the truth anymore. He said it was because of the Umbra Order. They’re organized. They’re armed. The Public Security Office tried to crack down on them a few times, but the losses were heavy. After that, they had no choice but to turn a blind eye.”

I had heard of the Umbra Order.

They were criminals along the border. They did everything-human trafficking, theft, forced begging. They moved from place to place, so no one could pin them down.

“After Prince Vance removed the chief from his post, he started tracking the child himself,” Woodrow continued, “He followed the trail all the way to Lunaris. And in the end, he really found him.”

I forgot how to breathe for a second.

“But the child’s voice was ruined with drugs. And his leg was crippled.

“His scent was also wiped away. So, there was no way to tell who he was.”

Woodrow’s voice grew softer. “Prince Vance asked if his name was Raymond. The boy didn’t nod or shake his head. He was very wary of Prince Vance. He kept trying to run. When Prince Vance tried to take him away, he banged his head against the wall and bit people. Prince Vance was afraid he might truly hurt himself…”

“So, he asked me to come,” I finished quietly.

Woodrow nodded.

I stood there without moving.

The wind blew through the dead oak branches. sent a chill down my spine.

A voice in my head kept shouting. “This can’t be Raymond. Raymond is dead.”

I saw his body.

That night, Samson sat on blood-soaked stone steps. He held that small, headless body in his arms.

I remembered the darkness in his eyes. I remembered the black blood dried on the stone. I remembered the moonlight shining on that tiny body, pale and terrible.

Raymond’s head was never found. But the scent on that body had been his-faint, mixed with blood and mud. But I could never mistake it.

I had made clothes for him with my own hands. I had held him in my arms countless times.
