Chapter 161 Not Holding on to Any Hope
Laila’s POV:
I nodded, but no sound came out of my throat.
Something was lodged there, blocking not just my voice but my breath.
Seeing this, the officer raised his hand and knocked on the door. “Your Highness, Ms. Conlay is here.”
A moment later, the door opened from the inside.
It was Samuel.
He wore a dark gray casual outfit. He looked noticeably worn out. There were dark circles under his eyes, his cheekbones seemed sharper, and he looked like he hadn’t slept properly in days. When he saw me, he let out a small breath of relief, then frowned. “Why have you lost so much weight?”
I gave a faint hum in response. My throat tightened, but my eyes drifted past him on their own.
Samuel stepped aside. “Come in.”
I did not move.
My feet felt nailed to the floor. My heart was beating so fast it felt like it would leap out of my throat.
Seeing this, Samuel reached out and took my hand. My hand was as cold as ice, while his palm was dry and warm. He gave it a gentle squeeze and said softly, “Go in. Whether it is him or not, we have to find out.”
I took a deep breath and tightened my grip on the honey candy in my hand.
It had been Raymond’s favorite. That time he said he was going to buy honey candy for me, his eyes had shone brightly, like they held two pools of melted amber. Later I heard from Miriam that he had saved his allowance for a long time and really did buy it. He hid it under his pillow and said he would wait until I came back.
I never got to taste that candy,
By the time I rushed back from the Ironclaw Pack, he was already gone.
I gently brushed the package with my thumb, my voice tight. “Where is he?”
“He’s locked in the room inside.” Samuel sighed “The kid has a lot of strength, and he’s not in his right mind.”
He led me in, then turned and closed the door, locking it behind us.
When he saw me staring at him blankly, he gave a bitter smile. “He’s tried to escape many times. Even with one bad leg, he’s still quick. He’s got this stubborn streak, like he’ll fight to the death. I was afraid he’d get hurt, so I had to keep him locked up for now.”
“Does he look like him?” I could not even control my tone. My feet felt like they were stepping on cotton as he guided me farther inside. I did not even notice that he had been holding my hand the entire time.
Samuel tightened his grip. “He does. But I can’t be sure. I hadn’t seen him for months before I went to the Vagen Battlefield. And… he looks like your third brother, Nicky.”
I stood there like an outsider, holding up the bag of honey candy, and called out stiffly, “Raymond!”
The sound squeezed out of my throat, dry and trembling, carrying a sob I could not control.
I had come here to prove that this was fake.
When I called his name, I only wanted to see how this false Raymond would react.
The child in Samuel’s arms suddenly went still.
Slowly, he lifted his head from Samuel’s chest.
Those eyes still carried traces of the madness and wariness from moments before. There was an unnatural redness in them. There was a cut on his forehead and several scratches across his cheek. His small face was dirty and so thin it had lost its shape. But that face, that face…
He stared at me.
His mouth slowly opened, revealing a row of uneven little teeth.
I covered my mouth with my hand.
Tears burst from my eyes like a dam breaking, pouring out uncontrollably.
