Holt gasped for breath, staring at Laila in utter disbelief, his mind completely blank.

Suddenly, Laila smiled.

That smile was like the blazing summer sun, brilliant and radiant.

It instantly took Holt back to the first time he had ever seen Laila. She had been smiling at her father, her expression just as dazzling as it was now.

One look, and he had been captivated-even though he was only 12 years old at the time.

Elara was seething with humiliation and rage. “Damn it! If I weren’t so old and past my fighting days, I’d tear you apart myself! Holt, now! Grab her!”

Just as Holt hesitated, a loud announcement came from the entrance. “Royal decree from the Alpha King!”

Walter Dane, the Beta who served at the Alpha King’s side, strode in with several guards. All arguments ceased immediately.

Holt rushed forward and dropped to one knee. I, Holt Enclaw, humbly receive His Majesty’s command!”

Walter smiled. “Please rise, General Holt. The decree isn’t for you. It’s for Ms. Conlay.”

Holt stood up awkwardly. He had assumed the king was sending additional rewards for him.

Elara snorted. “It must be because Laila angered His Majesty during her last visit to the palace. He’s probably sent a decree to scold her and tell her to behave.”

Was that it? Holt couldn’t help but glance at Laila. Her expression was calm, revealing nothing.

Walter wasted no time. He unfurled the scroll bearing the royal wolf crest and spoke in a clear, commanding voice, “Laila Conlay, receive the King’s decree!”

Laila exhaled slowly and knelt according to protocol. “Laila hears the King’s command!”

Walter’s voice rang through the hall, clear and authoritative.

“The Conlays of the Silvermoon Pack have served as generals for generations, distinguished by extraordinary merit. The former Alpha, Kain Conlay, and his five sons gave their lives in battle to reclaim the lost territory of Vagen. Their souls shall shine eternal. The kingdom honors their immortal achievements and sacrifice. Kain is hereby posthumously granted the title of Guardian of the Rydar Kingdom and the hereditary rank of Duke.”
