Reinforcements would eventually come to the Vagen Battlefield, but they might arrive too
late.
And going to the battlefield alone, there was only so much I could do.
That was why I had called upon my classmates from Moonlight Academy. The wolves who had awakened alongside me under the full moon and run with me through the frost-covered forests.
I asked them to join me on the march to Vagen, to hold the line with Samuel until reinforcements arrived.
Just one day into my journey, it started to snow. Light flakes dusted the branches, beautiful to behold, but I had no heart to appreciate it. Every crunch of frozen earth beneath my paws urged me to go faster, and faster still.
The Conlays had defended Rydar’s borders for generations with claw and fang.
My father and brothers had all died here.
Their only wish had been to keep the wolves within our territory safe from war, so our people could howl peacefully under the moonlight.
Now, that wish had become mine.
I would carry on their will in blood and fight until my last breath.
And then there was Maris.
Just thinking of her name made the hatred I had been suppressing tear through my chest like poison.
If she hadn’t been so greedy for glory, if she hadn’t slaughtered prisoners and massacred that village, my family would never have been wiped out.
Before this, I had never hated Maris. Even when she stole my mate, even when she looked down on me and insulted me, I still respected her for serving our nation and securing peace between Solantia Kingdom and Rydar Kingdom.
But now, all I wanted was to tear out her throat with my teeth.
I drew a deep breath and forced myself to stay calm. I could take Maris’s life whenever I

wanted, but the Vagen Battlefield couldn’t wait. Every wolf understood. Lost territory must be reclaimed with blood.
The night was dark and the wind howled. The show fell harder. The roads were empty and desolate, with only the occasional Rogue wandering about. Those packless lone wolves, their eyes glinting with hunger and wildness.
I didn’t disturb them. I quietly avoided them and continued racing toward the Vagen Battlefield at full speed.
On the morning of my fifth day, I finally set foot on the Vagen Battlefield.
But the closer I got to the front lines, the heavier my heart became. I saw no supply convoys along the way. Samuel clearly believed victory was already assured, unaware that the true storm had yet to arrive.
After reaching the war zone, I asked around and learned that only two towns remained unconquered-Irilla and Simonne.
As expected of Samuel, known as the Light of Rydar. He had already reclaimed 90% of the lost Vagen territory.
I took a deep breath and pressed on toward Irilla. Even a wolf spirit as powerful as Nita had nearly reached her limit after five days of running without rest.
But I didn’t stop. I had to see him today.
By nightfall, I approached the front lines. Samuel’s army was camped outside Irilla, the city still unconquered.
The ground before me was scarred with claw marks and stained with blood. Everywhere the flames of war had touched was filled with sorrow.
I loved this land. And it hurt, because my father and brothers had given their lives here.
But there was no time to dwell on it. I shifted back into human form and ran straight toward the camp, shouting at the top of my lungs. “Laila, daughter of General Conlay, requests an audience with Prince Vance!”
“Laila, daughter of General Conlay, brings urgent military intelligence for Prince Vance!”
“Laila, daughter of General Conlay, requests an audience with Prince Vance!”
I shouted as I ran, my hoarse voice cutting sharply through the night.
Fires flickered to life inside the tents. Werewolf soldiers poured out, claws at the ready. But upon hearing my father’s name, none of them attacked.
