Samuel stood on the small hill, not approaching any closer.

Once the battle had ended, he had already come to pay his respects.

He had chosen to bring Laila here because he saw in her the same near-stubborn resilience as General Conlay. Given time, this young she-wolf would never fall short of her father.

Once, he had believed she was destined for that path; the brightest Alpha wolf at Moonlight Academy, a future female general who would command armies.

Until she suddenly withdrew from the academy, swiftly formed a mate bond with Holt of Ironclaw Pack, and even announced to the outside world that she was merely a “docile Omega.”

He had thought she had chosen the den and cubs, rather than the battlefield and howls.

The battle report from Vagen was relayed back to the Royal Court by three werewolf messengers, passing it hand to hand over the course of three days.

When the Alpha King saw Laila’s name in the report, he froze for a moment, then immediately sent people to investigate Silvermoon Pack’s den.

Only then did he learn that on the very night he had reprimanded her, Laila had quietly rushed to the Vagen battlefield to deliver the warning herself!

Facing the uneasy members of Silvermoon Pack, the Alpha King did not assign blame.

He sighed softly to himself. Granting Holt and Maris the mate bond back then had been a mistake.

He issued an order to Drogo. “Go at once and deliver the royal decree. Laila has earned military merit; Samuel promoted her on the battlefield to Lieutenant Colonel, and I have no objections. In addition, I will confer upon her the rank of Major General. Once Simonne is taken and Vagen is reclaimed, she will be promoted to Lieutenant General.”

Promises made to soldiers on the battlefield could not be false. All the Betas understood that the Conlays had a worthy successor.

And Maris’s title of ‘general’ was only honorary. Her actual rank was merely Colonel, two levels below Major General.

If Laila were to be promoted to Colonel, she would outrank Maris by three full ranks.

One wondered whether Holt, upon seeing his outstanding former Luna on the battlefield, would feel even a trace of regret.

Thinking of this, Drogo reminded him carefully “Your Majesty, Holt and the others’ reinforcements still haven’t arrived. The deadline promised by General Maris has already passed.”
