Samuel let out a cold snort. In an instant, a crushing surge of alpha pressure flooded the tent and slammed straight into Maris.
She managed to hold on for barely two seconds before her legs buckled. She was forced down onto one knee, cold sweat pouring from her temples.
Only then did Samuel retract part of the pressure and say coldly, “From the very beginning of the Battle of Vagen, Major General Conlay personally fought in five major engagements and slew countless enemies. When Irilla fell, it was she who infiltrated the city and opened the gates. She then led three thousand troops and fought back and forth against nearly thirty thousand enemies, holding the granary under extreme conditions.
“Every single one of her merits is backed by battle reports, enemy heads, and testimony from fellow soldiers.
“This rank of Major General was personally conferred by His Majesty to recognize her achievements and to steady the morale of the army.”
“Impossible!” Maris snapped her head up, jealousy blazing in her eyes. “It must be you! Your old guards were crediting her with collective merit and forcibly pushing her into this position! She’s just an Omega. How could she possibly…”
“Whether you believe it is irrelevant.”
Samuel’s eyes turned glacial. “Now, step down.”
“But we brought the armored war wolves. On what grounds does she command them? I refuse.”
To Maris, handing over this elite force was no different from placing hardwon glory and future merit straight into Laila’s hands.
Laila would only need to issue orders from the rear, while the soldiers brought by them charged forward, bled, and died… Yet when the merit rolls were written, only Laila’s name would remain.
She absolutely did not believe that those socalled infiltrations and desperate defenses had been led by Laila. In her eyes, it was nothing more than a carefully staged performance by General Conlay’s loyal old subordinates-a desperate attempt to keep the shattered name of the Conlay family standing and to use the myth of “heroic bloodline” to rally morale.
She understood such political maneuvers all too well. And she refused to accept them.

What right did Laila have?
Just because she was born with the socalled blood of the Conlay family?

An Omega was naturally inferior to Alphas, even to strong Betas, in strength and battlefield instinct. However, her rank stood two full level above hers, a Beta who had fought and bled at Lovanfall and earned first-class merit?
The thought pushed her past restraint. Ignoring Holt’s repeated, nearly pleading glances, she lifted her chin and shouted with all her strength.
“I refuse!”
Exhaustion from the long march through wind and snow collided with the humiliation of the moment. igniting into roaring fury.
Why should the elite troops she had brought a such cost be handed over to that bitch?
“Then get out.”
Samuel’s gaze darkened like frozen depths. “M camp does not keep soldiers who disobey orders. If you refuse, take your refusal and go back the way you came. The Vagen battlefield has no shortage of Betas who question the marshal’s command.”
Holt immediately dropped to one knee, his right fist slamming hard against his chest. “Your Highness, we will comply with the arrangements! We…”
Maris shook free of his hand and lifted her head stubbornly. “Your Highness, you underestimate us too greatly! We also rendered great service at Lovanfall…”
“Who here hasn’t rendered great service?”
Samuel cut her off sharply, his voice like ice striking stone.
“Whose body isn’t marked with scars left by Solantian wolves? Whose claws haven’t been stained with enemy blood? Every inch of Vager is soaked in sacrifices far heavier and more real than your socalled ‘first-class merit.
“Put away your ridiculous pride and suspicion. Here, merit belongs only to those who survive and continue fighting, not to fools who cling to past records and try to bargain with them.”
Fools.
He called her a fool.
Maris’s chest heaved violently. She turned and flared at Laila. The shewolf said nothing at all. merely standing there in silence, eyes reddened letting others speak for her.
