Chapter 80 She Was So Kind

Holt’s POV:

“All units on alert! Get ready to fight!”

Laila stood up and gave the order, her face dead serious.

Every soldier-whether in wolf form or human form-instantly tensed up and got into position.

In seconds, they formed a perfect defensive circle, just like a pack of wolves preparing to face a threat.

The Solantian army was moving fast.

They marched down the frozen slopes in three perfect lines. It was honestly scary how synchronized they were.

On ice like that, anyone else would be slipping and sliding, but their boots were clearly fitted with steel spikes and magic runes. Their wealth and tech were on full display.

Soon, the massive wave of Solantians flooded the wasteland, coming to a dead stop right in

front of us.

The air felt heavy, and the only sound was their flags snapping in the wind.

I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I ran to the front and screamed, “Where on earth did you take Maris?!”

A tall figure slowly stepped out from their formation.

His amber eyes narrowed in the morning light.

It was Silas.

The Marshal of Solantia was here in person?

By the Moon… What kind of mess had Maris gotten herself into?

He ignored me and looked straight at Laila.

There were complicated emotions in his eyes. He was studying her, looking heavy-hearted, and there was even a hint of … guilt?

“Laila,” he said, his voice deep and raspy. “Can we talk alone?”

She nodded. “Sure.”

Silas looked at her and let out a heavy sigh. “If you’re worried, bring one guard. I’ll come alone.”

“I’ll go with you, Laila,” Viola said right away.

But Laila pointed at me. “You come with me.”

I was shocked, but I nodded quickly. “Okay!”

I had to find out where Maris was and if she was alive. But… Why did Laila pick me instead of her friend?

We walked to the open space between the two armies and stopped about 50 feet away from both lines.

I kept my eyes glued to Silas, but then I frozė.

The wind blew from his direction.

I could smell it… A faint trace of Maris’s scent.

Blood mixed with the sour smell of fear. It was almost hidden by his alpha scent, but it was there.

Silas gave Laila a small nod. “Silas Kincaid. Laila you carry General Conlay’s spirit.”

His tone was respectful, but his eyes were deep and cold.

Laila didn’t return the greeting. She just stood there, her gaze icy.

I couldn’t stop myself from stepping forward. “Where did you take Maris? Is she alive or dead?”

Silas finally looked at me. His stare felt like ice spikes stabbing through my skin. “Holt Enclaw. Laila’s former mate. Now Maris’s.”

“Yes! That’s me! I felt the mark I gave her disappear. What did you do to her?!”

I was furious. “Damn it, you can’t torture prisoners of war! That breaks the treaty!”

In an instant, Silas’s alpha aura surged.

He turned ascold as a block of ice.

He stared at me, every word dripping with venom. “You have no right to say that to me.”
