The night was as dark as ink. Campfires flickered in the distance like small orange stars.

I walked out of the tent alone and looked up at the sky over Vagen. I wondered which star was my father. Which ones were my brothers. Which faint light might be my mother and our people watching over me.

A few soldiers were gossiping nearby, the firelight hitting their faces.

“They fought all night. When General Enclaw came out, he looked like a ghost.”

“I heard he’s breaking the mate bond… By the Moon, that’s never happened in a hundred years. Breaking bonds with two mates in just a few months.”

“Hmph. Serves her right. That’s what she gets for bullying our Major General Conlay…”

The wind carried their voices away.

I looked away, tasting blood in my mouth. I must’ve bitten the inside of my cheek without realizing.

Revenge didn’t feel as good as I thought it would.

No matter what, the dead weren’t coming back.

“Looking at the stars?” a deep voice asked from beside me.

I didn’t even notice when Samuel showed up. His smoke-grey wolf eyes glowed softly in the moonlight. “I know a higher spot. Want to go?”

I hesitated for a second, then nodded.

In wolf form, we moved lighter and faster.

Soon, we ran across hills and streams. The night wind rushed past my ears, blowing away some of the heaviness sitting in my chest.

When we climbed up the western cliff, we could see the entire battlefield ruins below and the outline of Vagen in the distance. Only then did we shift back. We lay side by side on a flat rock that still held a little bit of the sun’s warmth

The stars felt close enough to touch.

“You’re lying so close!” Nita wagged her tail excitedly in my head. “This is the perfect chance, Laila! He’s right there! That powerful bloodline, those perfect genes…”

She paused, her voice dropping lower, but now it burned with encouragement. “Make your move! Even if he doesn’t want to be your lifelong mate, having a strong pup and raising it yourself would still be a win! Just imagine a cub with that silver-gray fur and smoke-grey eyes, blessed with natural strength and speed…”

My brain short-circuited. It felt like Nita had just snapped a string inside my head.

I instinctively turned to look at Samuel.

Moonlight poured over him, outlining his sharp jaw and the faint shadow under his high nose bridge.

Even just lying there relaxed, his body still showed the broad shoulders and lean waist of a top-tier predator. Under his simple uniform, his body looked like it held mountain-like strength.
