My Convicted Wife is My Mate (Bella and Kane) novel Chapter 14

chapter 13
BELLA’S POV

Two days later, my phone buzzed while I was folding laundry.

I wiped my damp hands on my skirt before picking it up. Kathy’s name flashed on the screen. My stomach twisted. I almost didn’t answer but I did.

“What do you want, Kathy?” I asked flatly.

Her voice was sugary. “Dad’s going to throw away Mom’s old album. You know, the one with your baby pictures? I thought I should tell you before it’s gone.”

My heart raced. “What? He wouldn’t”

“Oh, but he will,” she cut in “He said it’s cluttering up the shelf. I can give it to you… if you come get it.”

That album was one of the few things left of my mother and granddad. It held pictures from before everything went wrong, before prison, before my wolf vanished, before my family turned into strangers. It was filled with my baby pictures, of when me, my mom and my dad seemed happy together.

Was my father really that cruel? After my mom died, it didn't take him a few months before he started dating Kathy's mom. It was like he never even loved her at all. Now, he wanted to get rid of all her memories.

I didn’t trust Kathy, though. She never did anything out of kindness. She was probably plotting something.

“Why are you doing this?” I asked. I was suspicious. .

“Because I’m being nice for once. But if you don’t want it, I’ll just let him throw it away.”

The line went dead before I could reply. I stared at my phone for a long while. Kathy was lying. She always was but what if she really had the album? What if she really would destroy it? I wouldn't forgive myself if anything happened to that album.

I thought about it. Should I go see her?

I thought of my mom and all the memories we had in that album. I couldn't let it get destroyed.

I turned to Kane. “I have to go out for a bit. You can go to bed "

Kane looked at me from across the room.

“I won’t be long,” I said, putting on my coat before he could ask me where I was going.

He didn’t stop me. He just watched with that cold, curious look that always made it hard to tell what he was thinking. I wasn’t sure if he didn’t care or if he was simply respecting my space. Why didn't he ask where I was going so late?.

“Go to bed,” I said before leaving.

Outside, the air was cold. My breath came out in small clouds as I walked toward the bus stop. My phone buzzed again. It was a text from Kathy.

“Come to the Golden Moon Hotel. Garden Room.”

I froze. That place was expensive. It was five-star hotel on outside of town. I’d been there once, years ago… with Damien. My chest went tight at the memory.

The bus ride was quiet. Streetlights passed in a blur as I tried to calm how uneasy I was feeling.

Something wasn’t right. Kathy wouldn’t call me to a hotel for a family album.

When I arrived, the lobby sparkled with marble floors and crystal chandeliers. Wolves and humans in elegant suits and glittering gowns passed me by.

I felt completely out of place in my simple coat. Still, I followed the signs to the garden room.

As I entered the private room, Kathy was there. But she wasn't alone. A man in his fifties sat across from her. He was overweight and had a receding hairline. He eyed me from head to tow slowly, in a way that made my skin crawl.

Kathy smiled sweetly. “Bella! You came.”

I looked at the man, then back at her. “What is this?”
