My Convicted Wife is My Mate (Bella and Kane) novel Chapter 36

chapter 30
KANE’S POV

Bella talked while she ate. She told me about trying to “get me set up for success” as if I were some helpless stray who needed her guidance to survive in the city

It was almost amusing. She really had no idea.

I kept my face neutral, nodding once or twice while she explained how she could help me look for work, what kind of places might be hiring, and how she could help me “settle in.”

“I will look around,” I said simply, cutting another piece of steak. “If you want me to get a stable job, I’ll do that.”

Her entire face lit up with happiness. Her eyes were bright like I had just handed her a gift.

“Wonderful!” she said. She took my hand on the table and squeezed it. “That’s great, Kane.”

She was taking this sisterly role too seriously. It almost made me laugh. But I didn’t want to hurt her feelings, so I just lowered my head a little, pretending to focus on my food while hiding the smirk tugging at my mouth.

If only she knew.

If Bella knew who I really was - that I wasn’t some down-on-his-luck man trying to rebuild his life, but the Alpha of Stonewood Pack… the president of one of the largest conglomerates in the city - she’d probably choke on her wine.

People thought I was a rogue, exiled for some crime I never committed. Let them think that. It kept me invisible. And invisibility had its advantages.

The truth was, the Stonewood Pack was thriving. Our corporations’ revenue matched some countries’ GDPs. We owned property across cities, networks of influence that stretched farther than most people could imagine.

I had power. I had wealth. I had everything that should have mattered.

Yet, as I looked up, I found my eyes fixed on the woman across from me. Bella’s hair was tied back loosely, and a few strands fell across her cheek. The soft light from the kitchen glowed on her skin. There was no makeup, no jewelry, nothing extravagant but something about her calm presence, the gentleness in her eyes, pulled me in.

She was beautiful.

She didn’t try to impress me. She didn’t pretend to be someone she wasn’t. And that… intrigued me more than I’d liked to admit.

She ate quietly. Even while eating, she kept looking at me as if to make sure I was comfortable, as if she had forgotten she was the one who’d been through hell.

An ex-convict. A former doctor. A woman who had been crushed but still managed to stand tall.

I took another bite, pretending not to stare.

“You’re quiet tonight,” she said softly. “Well, you’re always quiet”

“Just thinking,” I replied.

“About what?”

“Everything.”

She tilted her head. “You mean pack business?”

“Something like that.” I gave a faint smile. “Don’t worry about it.”

She nodded and looked away, not pressing further. She respected boundaries. It was a rare trait.
