My Convicted Wife is My Mate (Bella and Kane) novel Chapter 46

chapter 39
Jane’s POV

“What do you mean I’m fired?”

My voice came out smaller than I meant it to. My supervisor didn’t even look up from the papers on her desk.

She just sighed, tapped her pen, and said flatly, “It’s an order from the superiors, Jane. You’ll receive one week of severance. Please clear out your desk by the end of the day.”

I stared at her, waiting for her to laugh, to tell me it was a misunderstanding. But she didn’t. My stomach dropped.

“Why is this happening?” I asked quietly, trying not to sound desperate.

She shook her head. “I don’t know the full details, but the decision is final. You’ll be compensated for the dismissal. But… you’ll never be employed here again.”

Never.

The word rang in my head. It sounded like a death sentence.

What the hell was happening?

I felt the room close in on me. My throat went dry. People who had attended the reunion party at the club last week had also been let go. Nina had mentioned Derek’s company filing for bankruptcy. But I hadn’t thought it would touch me.

Right then, all I could think was... how would I tell my family?

They had called in every favor they could find. They had spent thousands on my education just so I could get this job at the Urban Management Bureau.

It was a government job. It was secure and prestigious with excellent benefits and retirement. My parents had bragged about me for years.

And now… this.

If any of the men I’d gone on blind dates with found out I’d been fired, it’d be over. The only thing they ever liked about me was that I worked in government.

I felt sick to my stomach.

“Please,” I whispered, “there has to be some mistake.”

But my supervisor only said, “I’m sorry, Jane. It’s out of my hands.”

I packed my desk in silence. My coworkers avoided my eyes. Some looked away quickly, others whispered. The humiliation burned. I walked out of the building with my box in hand. My heart was pounding so hard I thought I’d faint.

I called Nina immediately. She always knew people — directors, businessmen, people who could fix things. But she didn’t answer. I called again. Ten times. Nothing.

The next day, I found out from a mutual friend that Nina’s family was in trouble too. Their house was being foreclosed. The bank had suddenly withdrawn their loan, and her family’s capital was frozen.

By the third day, more rumors spread. Someone from the Bureau messaged me privately:

“Jane, I heard your dismissal was for ‘misuse of power.’ That’s what they’re saying upstairs.”

Misuse of power?

My mind raced. The only thing I’d done that could even come close was asking Bella to deliver that document to the club. That wasn’t even my idea. It had been Nina’s. She was the one who said it’d be funny. She was the one who told me Bella deserved to be humiliated.

I tried to call Nina again. Finally, she picked up.

“Nina!” I blurted. “You heard, right? They fired me! And they said it’s because of that document, because of Bella! What the hell do we do?”

Her voice came through cold and flat. “Don’t look at me, Jane. I didn’t force you to do anything. You’re the one who wanted to see her humiliated. You agreed, remember?”

My mouth went dry. “You gave me the idea! You—”

She cut me off. “You acted on it. I just talked. That’s on you.”

Then she hung up.

I stared at my phone in disbelief. My hands trembled.

That bitch.

I threw my phone on the couch and sat down, trying to think, but my mind wouldn’t stop spinning.
