Eli could only shake her head in resignation. Meanwhile, Naomi... found herself standing in the middle of all the commotion.
At first, she only watched. Then Grace grabbed her hand. After that, Josh dragged her into the game. And before she realized it, she was already laughing along with them.
A genuine laugh. Free and unburdened, not the polite laughter or smile she had shown all this time. Not an expression made to please other people. Rather, laughter that came naturally because of what was happening in front of her.
For the first time since arriving in Sun City, her thoughts were not filled with Don Falcon. The Devereux family's will. Or the tragedy that had nearly separated her from Cale and Lydia.
When dinner was over and the campfire burned brighter, the entire family gradually gathered around it. The firelight danced softly across the face of every person seated in a large circle. From time to time, small sparks drifted into the air before disappearing into the darkness of the night.
Story after story began to flow. About Daven and Althea's childhoods, which were met with mutual looks of disbelief. Then came Chris's mischievous antics, which Cale confirmed without much argument. Along with Cale's strange habits that not many people knew about.
Then there were various embarrassing incidents that turned each family member into the target of teasing one by one. Laughter rang out continuously. Warm. Comfortable. And so full of life.
Nathan watched it all in silence. His gaze moved from one face to another. To his children and children-in-law. To his grandchildren. To the large family now sitting together around the campfire.
Riana, seated beside him, slowly took his hand. Nathan returned the gesture and let out a long breath. The corners of his eyes looked slightly moist as he stared at the flames before him.
“It’s been a very long time.”
Nathan's voice was low, but clear enough for everyone gathered around the campfire to hear.
“A very long time since our entire family was together like this.”
A warm silence settled over them for a few moments. No one interrupted because everyone understood what Nathan was feeling.
They had been through far too much together. Misunderstandings, separations, losses, and one problem after another that seemed to never give them a chance to breathe.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, they sat together beneath the same sky, gathered around a campfire that warmed the cold mountain air. There was no conflict. No threats. No distance separating them.
