The question made Naomi blink in disbelief. She had not expected the host’s first question to be about who had accompanied her. Exactly as Cale had predicted.
Without realizing it, Naomi smiled faintly. The man standing before her appeared the same way as well—smiling and trying to seem friendly, as a host should.
“Whoever is with me tonight,” Naomi said lightly. The corner of her eye flicked toward Chris standing beside her. “Does it have anything to do with you, Mr. Silas?”
A brief silence settled between them. Very brief, but enough for Naomi to catch the change that occurred.
Silas’s smile remained, but his gaze hardened for a fraction of a second. As though he had not expected to receive an answer like that. Even Chris had not expected Naomi to say what she just had. Meanwhile, several people standing nearby began glancing in their direction with curiosity.
“Of course not,” Silas finally replied with a soft laugh.
“In that case.” Naomi gave a small shrug. “I don’t think it’s something important enough to discuss right now.”
Chris immediately lowered his head, trying to hide the smile that nearly escaped.
Silas tried not to lose his composure. But for the first time since they had met, Naomi could see a trace of displeasure that the man failed to completely conceal.
Strangely, that made Naomi feel a little more at ease.
“I was only curious,” Silas said at last. No. He could not be reckless. Let the girl do whatever she wanted. If she was already within his sphere of control, Silas was certain Naomi would not speak so carelessly anymore.
“There’s nothing wrong with that, Mr. Silas. Curiosity is necessary,” Naomi replied.
“A lot of people want to meet you tonight, Miss Naomi. They’ve been waiting for quite some time.” Silas immediately changed the subject.
Naomi nodded politely.
“And...” Silas’s gaze shifted behind her for a moment. “Where is Mr. Kai?”
The question almost made Naomi smile. So in the end, that was what this man wanted to know as well?
“I don’t know.” Naomi shrugged.
Silas looked slightly surprised.
“Personally, I truly don’t know whether he’ll be able to come or not.” Naomi spoke casually. “You must know very well how busy my guardian is, don’t you, Mr. Silas?”
Several people standing around them began smiling faintly at that remark. Some agreed with what Naomi had said because they knew Cale Miller was not someone who attended events like this unless it was absolutely necessary.
