Jabco pressed the elevator button again.
Nothing.
He stared at the numbers above the door, watching them crawl down, one floor at a time. The elevator was going down to the ground floor first, then it would come back up. It felt unbearably slow.
His mind wasn’t on the numbers.
It was on Riyana’s face.
Her red eyes.
The way she didn’t wait for him.
The way she walked ahead without looking back.
Why didn’t she wait?
He clenched his jaw, his fingers tightening into fists. A strange uneasiness settled in his chest, heavy and sharp. Something wasn’t right. He knew her too well to ignore that look in her eyes.
Finally, the elevator arrived.
The doors slid open and Jabco stepped inside immediately, pressing the ground floor button without hesitation.
The doors closed, trapping him with his thoughts.
The ride felt longer than it should have.
“Damn it,” he muttered under his breath, impatient.
As soon as the elevator stopped and the doors opened, he rushed out, his long strides quick and tense.
Outside the entrance, bright lights reflected off polished floors. Cristo and the rest of the bodyguards were standing there, alert as always.
Jabco scanned the area.
His heart sank.
She wasn’t there.
“Where is Riyana?” he demanded sharply, his eyes moving from face to face.
Cristo blinked, clearly caught off guard. “Mrs. Grey isn’t here? She didn’t come out.”
“What?” Jabco snapped, his voice rising instantly. “How is that possible? She got into the elevator in front of me.”
Cristo shook his head quickly. “No, boss. She hasn’t come out.”
Jabco grabbed Cristo by the collar without thinking, pulling him forward. “Then where is she?”
“I swear, boss,” Cristo said urgently, his hands raised slightly. “She didn’t come out.”
Jabco released him, breathing hard. Panic crept in before he could stop it. He pulled out his phone and dialed her number immediately.
It rang.
Once.
Twice.
No answer.
“Riyana,” he said into the phone, his voice low and tight. “Pick up.”
He ended the call and turned sharply. “Search. Now.”
Cristo nodded instantly and signaled the others. The bodyguards began moving, scanning the area, spreading out.
Then they stopped.
Cristo’s eyes fixed on something behind Jabco.
“Boss,” he said quickly, pointing. “She’s there.”
Jabco turned.
And there she was.
