Dylan fell silent.

“Elena, what do we do now?” Amanda asked.

“Take him home.”

“Okay, I’ll call your big brother. He can come carry him; he’s got the strength.”

“No need.”

With a calm expression, Elena reached down, hoisted Dylan up, and slung him over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. She walked out the door without breaking a stride.

Amanda stood with her mouth open.

Dylan was equally horrified.

“Put me down! Where are you taking me! Put me down!” he yelled.

“Shut up. One more word and I drop you on the dirt,” Elena warned.

Dylan felt utterly humiliated. He was being carried by a woman!

“My goodness! That girl...” Amanda gasped, jogging to catch up.

It was a surreal sight.

The caretaker outside was eating fruits. When she saw Elena march out with Dylan on her shoulder, she nearly choked.

“You—where are you taking him?”

“Home. To take care of him.”

“You... you can't take him!” The woman panicked.

If the cripple left, her income vanished. One month of this salary was worth a year of other work. Sure, he was dirty and smelly, but her life here was easy!

“Why not? You certainly aren't taking care of him,” Elena countered.

The woman blustered, “Who says I’m not?”

“There were maggots in his bed. Did you see them? The sheets were soaked in urine and filth. Did you clean them?”
