Elena held back a scoff. The audacity of this woman.
Seeing Elena fall silent, Old Mrs. Whelan quickly changed the subject.
"Elena, dear, how are things progressing with the Sinclair boy?" she asked.
Amanda looked at Elena worriedly, unsure what the old woman was plotting.
Elena understood immediately. The fox was showing its tail. The real reason for this summons was her engagement to Dylan.
"Elena, why aren't you answering?" Old Mrs. Whelan pressed when Elena remained silent.
"Grandmother, you just said children shouldn't interrupt when elders are speaking. I'm just being obedient," Elena replied smoothly.
Old Mrs. Whelan stiffened, her face souring. This girl had a rebellious streak. She dared to use her own words against her.
"Elena! How dare you speak to Grandmother like that? You have no breeding!" A girl about Elena's age shouted from the side.
Amanda whispered, "That's Cathy Whelan, your Uncle Edward's daughter."
Elena turned her gaze to her cousin. "Cathy, is it? You say I have no breeding, but have you forgotten I took down all the Whelan family bodyguards last time I was here?" Elena's eyes locked onto hers.
Cathy's eyes widened in fear, remembering the rumors. Elena looked at her with amusement and disdain, as if Cathy were nothing more than a buzzing fly.
Flustered, Cathy turned to the matriarch. "Grandmother, look at her..."
"Enough! She's rude, but are you any better? Elena grew up away from home, so we don't know what kind of education she had. But you grew up in this house—where are your manners?" Old Mrs. Whelan scolded Cathy, though it was a backhanded insult to Elena.
