Edward and Gavin felt Old Mrs. Whelan's authority and immediately fell silent.
"Mom... Mom..." Daniel Whelan called out softly.
Old Mrs. Whelan suddenly sat up in bed, entirely motionless, her eyes wide open.
Daniel waved a hand in front of her face. There was no reaction.
He checked her breathing. She was gone.
"She's dead," Elena said from the side.
She didn't even need to step closer to check. Just looking at her state, she knew the old woman had passed. Sometimes, right before death, people experienced terminal lucidity, suddenly acting as energetic as they were in their youth. But once that burst of vitality vanished, their life reached its end.
"Mom!" Daniel wrapped his arms around Old Mrs. Whelan and broke down in tears.
She was his biological mother, after all. No matter what she had done in the past, they had made their peace at the very end. Old Mrs. Whelan had been right about one thing: Daniel truly was the kindest among them.
"Mom is gone!" Edward said, his eyes welling up with tears.
Gavin wiped the corner of his eye, though it was hard to tell if the tears were genuine or forced.
As for Maggie and Lauren, they practically competed over who could wail the loudest.
"Oh, Mom! Why did you have to leave us!" Maggie cried out. Inwardly, she was thrilled. *Finally dead! No one will be breathing down my neck anymore.*
"Mom! How could you bear to leave us behind! Mom!" Lauren sobbed loudly. Her internal monologue was entirely different. *You dead old hag, I finally outlasted you.*
Cathy and Jane looked completely indifferent, not showing an ounce of sorrow.
