Night fell, yet they remained locked inside the windowless cell. The guards eventually tossed in three bowls of cold, unseasoned rice.
"Is... is this all we get to eat?" Theresa stammered.
"What? Did you think you were here on vacation?" the guard sneered. "I'm telling you right now, you should consider yourselves lucky today. Tomorrow... whether you even get a bowl of rice depends entirely on your luck!"
The other two captives didn't care; they devoured the cold food like starving animals.
Theresa had zero appetite, but she knew she was trapped in a den of monsters. If she didn't eat, she might not have the strength to survive another day.
Forcing down her disgust, she scraped the bowl clean just to stay alive.
When the lights finally went out, Theresa lay curled up on her thin, damp mattress, unable to sleep.
Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
"Mom... Dad... I miss you so much!" she sobbed softly.
"Elena, where are you? Please come save me!"
"Damn you, Logan! This is all your fault! You got me into this!"
Hearing her muffled cries, the guy next to her finally spoke up. "Stop crying. Tears are useless in a place like this. Just focus on living to see tomorrow."
"How did you guys end up here?" the other girl whispered in the darkness.
When they had jumped into the river, there had been four of them. The man who was shot dead had been part of their group.
