"What kind of proposition?"
"I'll keep your secret, and you convince Dylan's father to reinstate our engagement."
Restoring the engagement wasn't a difficult task for Amber.
But she didn't trust Elena.
"How do I know I can trust you?"
"Lady Amber, regardless of anything else, you are Dylan's biological mother. I can't exactly go around broadcasting your private affairs. What good would that do me or Dylan? Besides, I was only at the Crown Hotel by chance today. I have zero interest in your private life. Believe it or not, it's up to you."
Amber's inscrutable gaze swept over Elena as she weighed the words.
"Fine, I accept. But if you ever think about using this to blackmail me in the future, I suggest you drop that idea right now!"
Elena shrugged. "Sorry, I really don't care enough about you to try."
After Elena left, Mira approached.
"Madam."
"Mira, do you think Elena can be trusted?"
"I don't think she would run her mouth. After all, we belong to the Third Branch, and Master Dylan is your son. Leaking this wouldn't just ruin your reputation; it would ruin his too. It does her no favors. Besides, someone with her blunt personality isn't likely to go back on her word."
Amber let out a long sigh. "I thought the same. But the idea of someone holding this kind of leverage over me makes it impossible to sleep at night."
"Madam, Mr. Bennett recently returned to the country. You should see less of him. Even Elena spotted you. If anyone from the Second Branch catches you, we'll be completely finished!"
Amber's fingers gripped her teacup tightly. "But my Declan rarely comes back. Do you have any idea how much I've missed him all these years? Now that we're finally reunited, of course I want to spend as much time with him as possible."
"Shh... Madam, keep your voice down. In any case, you need to be extremely careful when you meet from now on."
