"Enough!" Jane screamed at the top of her lungs.
The entire room gasped. Jane had always played the role of the sweet, accommodating girl. She had never lost her temper before.
Her disappointed gaze swept over everyone in the hall.
"Manners? Grandma, did you ever genuinely see me as your granddaughter? You only cared about the family's image. You never cared about me! You groomed me into a socialite just so you could use me to bring wealth to the Whelan family. Don't act like I don't know exactly what you were plotting.
"I'll tell you all right now—except for Uncle Daniel's family, every single one of you is a massive hypocrite. You only care about your own interests, and I am sick of it! I am done being your Perfect Daughter. Yes, I caused this mess, and I'll take the punishment. I will fix it myself! I will never beg any of you for help again, and don't you ever dare try to use me again!"
Lauren stared at her daughter in horror. "Jane, what... what are you saying?"
"What is she saying? I think she's lost her mind! Spouting absolute nonsense and daring to talk back to me! You think your wings are fully grown now?" Old Mrs. Whelan snarled.
"Grandma, you are the most selfish person in this entire house. You are the reason this family is falling apart!" Jane held the old woman's gaze, having completely abandoned all restraint.
Old Mrs. Whelan trembled with rage.
"Someone, get the cane! Daring to disrespect me like this... if I don't teach her a lesson today, there will be no rules left in this house!"
The butler hurried over and handed her a thick wooden rod.
"Beat her! Make sure she understands her mistakes today!" the old lady ordered.
Jane stood rigidly in place, refusing to say a word.
The butler raised the rod and brought it down hard across her back.
