"Fair enough," Chris nodded. "Let's do that."
At the hospital.
Old Mrs. Whelan lay weakly in her hospital bed, her eyes scanning the crowded room, searching for Daniel.
"Where is my eldest son? Why isn't he here? Did you even call him?" she rasped, her voice barely a whisper.
In her eighties, her body was rapidly failing. She was nearing the very end.
Her second son stepped forward. "Mom, we called him multiple times. But you know how bad things ended with his family. He's probably not coming."
A spark of anger flared in the old woman's eyes. "I don't care what you have to do, I need to see him! Bring him to me!"
"Okay, Mom. Just rest. We'll go figure it out."
The Second and Third Branches shuffled out into the hallway.
Maggie leaned in, whispering harshly. "What is she playing at? Demanding to see Daniel now? She's on her deathbed. Instead of splitting up the estate, she's calling for the outcast? Is she planning to give his family a cut?"
"Over my dead body!" Lauren hissed. "His family was kicked out years ago. They haven't had anything to do with us. They don't deserve a single cent!"
The two families began to bicker in hushed, vicious tones.
Jane stood off to the side, completely silent.
She knew she wasn't getting a dime. The old lady despised her now. Frankly, Jane couldn't wait for her to die.
Ever since Elena had brutally destroyed her reputation, Jane and her sister Cathy had kept a low profile, terrified to even leave the house.
So, when it came to the inheritance, she kept her mouth shut.
Cathy, however, was anxious. Terrified that Daniel's family would swoop in and steal the inheritance, she aggressively plotted with the others to stop them.
Just then, Daniel and Amanda stepped out of the elevator.
