Scarlett's face twisted into a mask of pure, unhinged venom. "Do you know why I've been bedridden all these years? Because the man I loved was secretly feeding me slow-acting toxins! For years, those drugs hollowed out my organs, destroyed my vitality, and turned me into a pathetic invalid waiting to die!"
"And what did he do? He lived a life of luxury, cavorting with Lady Amber and his other mistresses! Men are heartless, opportunistic parasites! Ethan is different! He may be simple, but his love is pure. You've always treated him better than anyone else. Marrying him is the smartest choice you will ever make! Hahahaha!"
"You're a lunatic! You're completely out of your mind!" Elena spat. "I was kind to Ethan because I refused to watch an innocent man get bullied! And you weaponize my own compassion to destroy my life? You're a monster!"
She had misjudged Scarlett entirely.
Scarlett wasn't the frail, devout victim she played in public. She was the aristocratic daughter of the cutthroat Turner dynasty—of course, she possessed a lethal, Machiavellian intellect.
"I know you hate me right now, but didn't you promise to repay your debt to me? Elena Whelan, do not forget that you are only breathing because I pulled you out of Falveria!" Scarlett sneered.
"There are a thousand ways to repay a debt, but this isn't one of them! Let me go, Madam Scarlett. If you do, I'll pretend none of this ever happened."
"Scoff! You are in no position to negotiate. I suggest you play the part of the happy bride, Elena. It's the safest option for everyone."
"I'd rather die!" Elena violently ripped the vintage veil from her head.
She tried to lunge out of the chair, but Scarlett casually shoved her back down with a single hand.
The relaxant had left Elena so weak that she couldn't even overpower an elderly woman.
Looming over her, Scarlett whispered, "I have high expectations for you, Elena. Don't disappoint me."
"Do you honestly think you can keep me drugged forever? I'll find a way to end it myself before I let him touch me. What good is a corpse for a daughter-in-law?"
