Chapter 591

Natalia’s POV 1

The closet door burst open before anyone had a chance to say another word.

Jane came out first, which didn’t surprise me. She always had been the bolder of the children, even as a baby. She took one look at me standing in the middle of the living room and stopped dead in her tracks.

Her mouth opened, then closed without saying anything. Her eyes, so much like her mother’s, filled immediately with tears.

Daddy,she whispered.

That was all it took. Without speaking, I crossed the room in three strides and caught her as she threw herself at me, wrapping her arms around my neck and squeezing with a strength that took me by surprise.

She was taller than I expected. Leaner. The six year old I remembered had been replaced by someone who looked almost grown, with long dark hair and sharp eyes that had seen more than any eleven year old should ever have to. She looked wise and intelligent, like there was a world of knowledge in that head of hers. I was proud of her already even though I still had so much to catch up on.

I held her for a long time. Neither of us said anything. There wasn’t much to say.

When she finally pulled back, she was wiping her face with the back of her hand, trying to look composed, and failing at it completely. I knew you weren’t dead, she said, jutting her chin out

stubbornly.

Behind Jane, hovering near the doorway of the closet, was Hope.

She was small. Smaller than I was expecting. She had Natalia’s coloring in the face and eyes, although my dark hair. She looked at me with wide, uncertain eyes, wringing her hands.

She had no memory of me. I understood that, even if it stung badly.

I crouched down so I wasn’t towering over her. Hi, sweetheart,I said.

Hope said nothing. She looked at Jane.

Jane nudged her gently. That’s our dad,she said, smiling. Go on.

Hope looked at me again. I stayed where I was and waited, letting her make up her mind at her own pace. A moment passed. Then she took one small step forward, then another.

Then, she stepped into me and let me wrap my arms around her, and I shut my eyes.

She smelled like soap and cookies, and she was so small that my arms nearly went around her twice. I felt her relax, slowly, the tension easing out of her little shoulders by degrees. I didn’t say anything, and neither did she. After a moment, her arms came up and looped carefully around my neck.

I had to blink back the mist in my eyes.

When I stood, Hope came with me, and I settled her against my hip. She didn’t protest.

Around us, the house had filled up quickly. Pack members were crowding the entryway, some weeping openly, others laughing and clapping each other on the shoulder. Mila was herding people out of the way, and the Beta was outside.

Through the front window, I watched the last of the warriors retreat down the driveway, escorting a limping Aurelius.

Natalia was watching me with Hope in my arms, and her eyes were filled with tears, but she was smiling.

Grace, who had just entered, looked at me matter of factly.

Well, she said. Now that that’s all sorted-she glanced out the window at the retreating warriors- someone should cook dinner.

It’s barely noon,Max said.

Exactly. Plenty of time.

That was how it started.

By early afternoon, the kitchen was full. It wasn’t a large enough kitchen for all of us together, but we made it work. Grace had taken over one end of the counter and was ordering us all around. Natalia was beside her, laughing, cheeks flushed from the heat of the stove.

Max had been given the job of peeling potatoes and was complaining about it rather loudly. Jane was methodically chopping herbs while Hope sat on the counter next to her, swinging her little legs.

You’re doing it wrong,Jane suddenly said, glancing at me.

I looked down at the pot I was stirring. Am I?

You have to stir slower. She walked over to me and demonstrated how to do it, reaching up to take the spoon from me and drawing it in long, deliberate circles. Mom always says rushing it makes it bitter.

Your mom says a lot of things.

Jane handed the spoon back, unbothered. She’s usually right.

She is,I agreed, then lowered my voice and leaned in. But don’t tell her I said so.

Jane’s mouth curved. She returned to her work, and Natalia looked over at us with a raised eyebrow.

What?Jane asked.

I’ve told you three times-

I’m helping,Jane said innocently.
