“He’s gotten so strong,” Andrei whispered as, a little while later, we stood beneath the hot spray together. I traced my fingers across the tamiliar planes of his chest and abdomen, leaving patterns in the hair. Everything was the same. Everything. As if not a single day had passed since he left.
“He has.” I rested my cheek on his chest and sighed softly. “You should see Jane. She’s so smart. She wants to be a healer. She’s been training under the Bloodmoon healers.”
Andrei traced a pattern down my spine. “And Hope?”
“She’s a little bundle of energy,” I laughed. “But she’s sweet, and a good girl. She loves Jane. And she asks about you often.”
“I wish I could have been there for all of them.”
I looked up at Andrei. His smile had faded, replaced by something sadder. Without thinking, I stood on my tiptoes and kissed him softly. He returned the kiss in kind, deepening it, gently pressing me against the wall of the shower. The tiles were cold, but I let him press me there and hook my leg up around one of his hips.
“They never gave up hope about you,” I said, reaching for the soap. I squirted some into my palm and lathered it into the hairs at his chest, making him close his eyes. “They just knew you were away for a while. That’s all.”
“And you?” he whispered. He pressed closer. I felt his member, already half–hard, gently grazing my entrance, and it made me
bite my lip in expectation.
“I never gave up,” I replied. I finished soaping his front up, then moved to his back, wrapping my arms around him and sliding my hands up and down his spine. The movements pulled him closer still so that he was pressing more firmly against my folds, nearly slipping into me already from how slick and ready I was.
“You never took another lover?” he asked, one corner of his mouth lifting in a smirk. “I wouldn’t be angry if you did.”
“Never.” I arched my hips toward him. “For the record, I’ll be angry if you did.”
He grinned. Then swept into me with one push that had me gasping.
“I would expect no less,” he whispered. He dipped his head, nipping at my neck, right where the mating mark still existed as a small, gently raised scar. The bond flared to life, hot and sharp and right, and I dug my fingers into his hair and drew him closer.
“Bite me again,” I whispered.
“But you already have the mark—”
“I want to feel it. Please.”
I didn’t have to ask him twice. The sharp tips of his fangs dropped, then sank into my skin with a soft crunch like biting into an apple. Pain shot through me, intense and dizzying, and I smiled and leaned my head back against the shower wall as he thrust into me in time with each wave of pain.
Then, I bit him too, and we peaked together beneath the hot water that turned pink from our blood as it ran down the drain.
And for the first time in five years, I was happy. Truly, deeply happy.
The Beta came the next morning. He said little as he picked us up, although not for lack of wanting to. His eyes were wide, and he seemed too dumbfounded to speak. We paid our bill, tipping the woman extra, then left.
A few hours later, finally, we arrived home. Andrei let out an audible sigh as we approached the familiar landscape of Moonshadow, as did 1. Max was bouncing in his seat, eager to get out of the car and tell everyone about how he had single- handedly saved his mom and dad.
