By this point Jane had completely lost consciousness. While the neurotoxin might take longer to affect a man of Sebastian’s stature, for a slender girl its spread was nearly instantaneous.
The onlookers could not help but feel a twinge of pity. If Renee had not been blinded by hatred and had chosen to live her own life, her talents would have surely earned her a successful future. Instead her daughter had become a sacrificial lamb on the altar of her revenge. It was a realization that had come far too late. If even Lilian’s formidable medical skills were useless, Jane’s chances of survival were non-existent.
The lead officer felt a moment of hesitation given the tragic scene, but the severity of the crimes steeled his resolve. "Please cooperate with us and come to the station," he said coldly. He then signaled to his team. "Take her into custody."
Two officers exchanged a glance before moving forward with a sense of dread. Just as they reached for Renee, she suddenly pulled a hairpin from her hair and pressed the sharp point against her own throat. "Stay back! If anyone comes closer, I will die right here!"
She could not let them take her. If she were locked away, her daughter was truly lost. She had to save Jane. Her hand tightened and a bead of crimson blood began to trickle down her neck.
The two officers immediately recoiled and raised their hands in a calming gesture.
The lead officer’s expression remained grim. "Resisting arrest and obstructing an investigation will only make your eventual sentence more severe. Think about what you are doing."
Renee’s eyes were glazed and distant. "I do not care. I do not care if I spend the rest of my life in a cell. I can not go with you now. Look at my daughter! I have to save her! If you take me away, her last spark of hope is gone. She is so young. She has seen nothing of the world yet. I will not let her leave me like this!"
The officer found himself in a difficult position. They were under strict orders to bring Renee in today, but if she committed suicide in front of everyone, the political fallout would be disastrous given the international implications of the case.
