Rewrite Her Thrilling Life (Lillian and Sebastian) novel Chapter 878

A moment later, the study door creaked open.

Everly stepped inside, her eyes fixed cautiously on Cary as he sat behind the desk. "You asked for me?" she whispered.

Cary looked up, his face a mask of cold fury. "You went to see Sebastian today."

Everly’s face drained of color. "Yes," she stammered, her heart racing. "I went to see him."

She knew that denying it now would only provoke a violent outburst from her grandfather. He wouldn't have asked unless he already knew the truth.

Cary let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "At least you admit it. Now, tell me—what exactly was your mission? Did you go there to warn him? To tell him I’ve set a trap and I’m just waiting for him to fall in?"

"No! It wasn't like that, Grandfather!" Everly explained desperately. "I only went to ask if he had made a decision about the alliance. I wanted to know when he was coming to the estate to propose. The week is almost up, and all of Murica is talking about our families uniting. Since he hasn't stopped the rumors, I assumed he had agreed to the marriage. I thought it would be better to have him finalize it so we could start our preparations. I didn't reveal a single thing about your plans, I swear! You’re my grandfather—I would never betray you. You’re the person closest to me in the world."

Cary’s gaze was thick with sarcasm. "Is that so? Should I thank you then, for not breathing a word of my plans? I must say, you truly are a devoted granddaughter. Are you really that desperate to marry your own enemy that you’d crawl onto his turf to beg for a wedding? Do you have any idea how much shame your little stunt has brought upon the Cary family? Right now, every person in Murica knows my granddaughter went to Sebastian to force a marriage. How much longer are you going to drag my reputation through the mud?"

Cary watched her reaction with a cruel, mocking smile. "Surprised? You pour your heart out to him, and he turns around and hands the transcript to the press. Not only have you made yourself a laughingstock, but you’ve dragged the entire Cary name down with you. I warned you to face reality, but you refused to listen. Is the pain he’s already caused you not enough?"

Everly stared at the paper, her voice trembling with grief. "How could he do this? We’re supposed to be forming an alliance! Doesn't he realize that humiliating me reflects poorly on him as well?"

Cary let out a harsh huff. "An alliance? What makes you think he ever agreed to an alliance? Those rumors? Let me tell you something: until he makes a public, formal statement, nothing is set in stone. And you were foolish enough to use baseless gossip as an excuse to go and beg for a ring. It’s a tragedy that your IQ doesn't match your face. To put it bluntly, you aren't even a fraction of the woman Lilian is. No wonder Sebastian chose her over you. If I were him, I wouldn't fall for a woman this stupid either."
