Everly’s voice shook with indignation. "But if he didn't agree, why would he let those stories keep circulating? As the head of Austine Financial Group, no media outlet would dare report on him without his say-so."
Cary let out a cold, sharp laugh. "That is exactly why I say you are stupid beyond measure. The news says our families are uniting, but has that man stepped forward to say a single word? Has he ever acknowledged it? If he rejects the proposal later, he can simply tell the world he had no knowledge of the rumors. At that point, we are the only ones left with egg on our faces. Your actions today have made the entire Cary family the laughingstock of Murican high society. I gave him a week, and I never expected you to have so little patience that you’d go crawling to his doorstep. You stood there and said those self-righteous things, and now you ask me what to do? Tell me, if he refuses to marry you now, how do you expect to show your face in Murica ever again?"
"Grandfather, what should I do now?" Everly asked, tears streaming down her face. "I admit I was wrong. I was so incredibly foolish."
Cary looked at her with pure disdain. "Now you ask me what to do? Why didn't you ask for my opinion before you took it upon yourself to go there? I told you this is a critical time and we cannot afford a single mistake, but did you listen? You were so blinded by your obsession with that man that you disregarded the entire family. Now that you've caused a disaster, you come to me for help. Don't you think it’s a bit late for that?"
"Grandfather, I was wrong! I was truly wrong! I’ll listen to everything you say from now on. I’ll never act on my own again. Please, just help me this once," Everly sobbed. She never imagined Sebastian could be this ruthless—completely disregarding her dignity.
Cary’s gaze remained icy. "Do you truly understand your mistake?"
Everly nodded frantically. "I do. I won't harbor any more fantasies about that man. I will cooperate fully with your plans and get revenge for our family."
Cary let out a long, weary sigh. "It’s good that you’ve realized it. Facing reality sooner rather than later is for your own good. Don't worry about the news for now. This is the only way he can try to spite us at the moment. Once the deadline hits, if he still hasn't given me a proper answer, he’ll find out exactly how ungracious I can be."
A private plane touched down softly at an estate in Murica.
As Lilian stepped off the aircraft and looked at her surroundings, she turned to Eric. "Where are we?"
Eric smiled. "This is the Philips family’s ancestral home. Aside from Grandfather and me, no one usually stays here. You can rest easy in this house."
"But I thought we agreed to stay at a hotel," Lilian noted.
