"Mom, what are you talking about?" Janet complained. "You're putting her in a difficult position. I told you last time—we’re adults with our own choices. If Sebastian chooses Everly, that’s his decision. Forcing me into the middle of it just makes things awkward for everyone."
Martha shot Janet a frustrated look. "You child, I’m only trying to set you two up because Sebastian is such a catch. Besides, the alliance hasn't happened yet, has it? I’m also doing this for Uriel’s sake. If that Everly really marries into the family, she’ll be dealing with a headache every single day."
Just as the words left her mouth, a delicate female voice rang out. "So this is where you are. I’ve been looking for you for ages." The group looked up to see Everly approaching in her high heels, a sweet smile plastered on her face.
Uriel looked up at Everly and asked flatly, "Did you need something?"
Everly sat down beside Uriel and said demurely, "I mainly wanted to have a private chat with you. If you two don't mind?" She glanced toward Martha and Janet.
"I don't believe Miss Everly and I have anything to discuss," Uriel declined coldly.
Everly smiled. "How could that be? Grandfather specifically asked me to come over and pay my respects to you."
Sensing the undercurrents between them, Martha said awkwardly, "Since you two need to talk privately, Janet and I will head back out. Remember to call me if you need anything."
In that case, she might as well tear off the mask and force them to accept her. They wouldn't dare do anything to her right now anyway.
Janet pulled her mother behind her and glared at Everly with cold eyes. "Miss Everly, you’d do best not to be so arrogant. Whether or not you and Mr. Whitmore actually get engaged is still an unknown. Don't count your chickens before they hatch, or you might find yourself humiliated if he refuses the alliance. Furthermore, no matter our status in Murica, it isn't your place to lecture us. From what I know, the Chris family’s standing has plummeted over the past two years. If that weren't the case, you wouldn't be so desperate to climb social ladders. I just wonder if this particular branch of the Austin family is one you can actually hold onto."
"You!" Everly’s expression turned hideous.
