Lucian fell silent for a moment. "It's because I'm the flawless investment he poured thirty years of blood, sweat, and endless resources into creating... and the only core engine capable of keeping the Shapiro family running smoothly in the future."
"He was saving the Shapiro family's future, an investment that absolutely could not fail, the sole key to maintaining the operation of the entire system."
His life didn't belong to him, but to the entire Shapiro family, yet now, he was saying he wanted to place his life in her hands.
Loyce's eyes flickered slightly. She could clearly feel the emotions radiating from the man at this moment—not sorrow, but a deep grief toward his own predetermined fate.
He seemingly had everything, yet he lived in more pain than anyone else.
Loyce didn't know what to say. She wasn't good at handling emotional issues, so after a brief thought, she took out a piece of medicinal candy from her pocket, unwrapped it, and popped it into the mouth of the man half-kneeling in front of her.
"A newly improved flavor. Peach," she said.
Lucian let out a soft chuckle. The heavy emotions clinging to him dissipated in that instant. Rolling the sweet on his tongue, he stood up and headed for the cockpit. "It is sweet."
From Metropia to the Cryovoltic Peaks, Eastern Range, they refueled once along the way, flying for nearly eight solid hours before arriving at the outer perimeter of the mountain range.
Soldiers stationed nearby had received advance notice and had already set up camp here to wait.
As soon as they crossed into the mountain range's airspace, the helicopter was constantly shaken by turbulent air currents, forcing Lucian to slow down.
The turbulence made Loyce feel miserable. Affected by the dropping temperatures, even though the cabin was heated, the cold air seeping through the cracks left her dizzy and unwell.
It wasn't until the helicopter touched down securely at the campsite that soldiers waiting outside rushed over with thermal blankets. The moment the cabin door opened, the freezing air hit them so hard it made their scalps go numb.
Just as Loyce felt the chill, a blanket was wrapped around her from head to toe. Lucian guided her out of the helicopter and quickly walked her into a tent.
Inside the tent, a heater was humming, and thermal gear was laid out on a small cot. Lucian touched Loyce's somewhat pale face. "That last stretch was rough. The air currents were too unstable."
"I'm fine." Loyce shook her head. "I brought medication. I'll feel better in a minute."
Lucian: "Change your clothes first. I'll be back in a bit."
By the time Loyce had changed, the man walked in holding a thermos and a dark green scarf. The thermos contained fresh coffee he had just brewed. He poured her a cup and handed it to her. "We won't make a plan and confirm our entry time into the mountains until tomorrow. Eat something and rest for the night to recover."
