Loyce smiled up at him. "Thanks, Morris. Should we go grab Grandpa and get some late-night food?"
"Let's go." Morris took her hand and led her out of the entertainment room. Their close sibling bond left the other girls in the room burning with envy.
Yorick had spent the entire night scheming and putting on a show, yet he hadn't earned a single smile from the woman he desired. He was genuinely furious.
He firmly believed the architect of his failure tonight was Lucian.
But before Yorick could hunt him down, Jasmine intercepted Lucian in the hallway.
The man stood by the balcony window, the roaring ocean wind whipping the white curtains behind him.
He stood in the shadows of the night, staring down at the red-eyed woman before him with absolute zero emotion.
"Are you still blind to who Loyce really is?" Jasmine demanded, unable to hold back her rage any longer.
Lucian stood with one hand casually tucked into his suit trousers, the fingers of his other hand absentmindedly tracing the window frame.
He didn't so much as blink. "Blind to what?" he countered coldly.
His total indifference to her words pushed Jasmine over the edge. She took a step forward, her voice trembling with suppressed fury and heartbreak.
"Blind to what kind of person she is! Today she wears a dress Yorick gave her, tomorrow she'll accept favors from someone else! She's just using everyone who can give her an advantage! She's the heiress to a massive fortune; she's not an idiot. Do you honestly think she doesn't view marriage as a business transaction? She liked your status, your power. But now you have no military backing, your company's stock is tanking, and you're about to lose everything! She will leave you! Why can't you see that?!"
Lucian finally leveled his gaze at her. His eyes were so calm they bordered on cruel, looking at her as if she were an irrelevant object.
When he spoke, his low voice lacked even a ripple of emotion. "And?"
Jasmine struck her own chest, her voice fierce. "Me! Even knowing you've lost everything, I'm willing to accept you! I'm willing to use my father's power to help you rebuild!"
"Heh."
She poured her heart out, but all it earned was an unfathomable, chilling laugh from Lucian. "What makes you think that without Loyce, I would ever fall in love with you?"
Jasmine's pupils contracted sharply.
Lucian's fingers stopped tracing the window frame and dropped to his side. "How long did we work together?"
