Tanur's words were a shot of adrenaline for Yale. It made him realize that businessmen at this level only cared about the bottom line. Tanur didn't give a damn about a foreign country's internal political struggles; as long as the profit was high enough, everything was negotiable.
"I will grant you the highest clearance," Tanur said finally. "Money is not an issue. Market shares in certain regions can be negotiated too. Hell... if X is interested, we might even collaborate in specific sectors to crush our competitors. Yale, this is a crisis, but it’s also an opportunity. It’s up to you how you play your cards."
The call ended.
Yale sat in the dark of his safe house, motionless for a long time.
This trip might actually be his ticket to walking away clean.
After a while, he slowly lifted his head. The last trace of hesitation in his eyes was replaced by a ruthless, gambler's desperation.
He grabbed another encrypted device and summoned a highly covert squad of mercenaries loyal only to him.
Of course, he couldn't completely trust the grand promises Tanur had made, nor could he trust that X would play by the rules. He had to leave himself an out and prepare for the worst.
"X..." Yale muttered the codename, his expression complex. "Let's see what kind of opponent you really are to make Ares Global tread so carefully."
At the hotel, Baldwin Shapiro and his wife Joanna had been waiting up all night for their son Channing and Luna to return. Dawn broke, but the only news they got was that everyone had gone off the grid.
They were just about to head out to search when they caught the morning news on the television. It was a live military press conference, and right there on the screen were Lucian Shapiro, leaning on his cane, and Loyce. They both looked immaculate. Not a scratch on them.
Joanna stared in disbelief. "Didn't they say the plan was foolproof? Why... why is she at a press conference?"
Listening to Loyce on the screen explaining how she had been reflecting on how to address the public since she got home last night, Baldwin knew immediately that things had gone south.
"They didn't get them." His face tightened as he hurriedly hailed a cab and gave the driver an address.
Joanna couldn't wrap her head around it. "Was the plan exposed?"
"No," Baldwin said grimly. "If the plan had been exposed and our identities compromised, Lucian would have arrested us by now. We wouldn't just be sitting here."
"But if it wasn't them, who could have quietly taken Luna and her elite team?" Joanna paced anxiously. "My son... if anything happens to Channing, I won't survive it!"
If it wasn't them, who else?
A single codename flashed in Baldwin's mind.
X.
The mysterious arms dealer making deals with the government, the one Luna had accidentally stumbled upon! Just because they hadn't caught the culprit then didn't mean they would leave a ticking time bomb out in the open!
