Yale stared at the torture weapons in her hands and let out a cold laugh. "Do you think you can scare me? Even if I'm exposed, I can still walk out of here alive!"
He suddenly ripped open his suit jacket, revealing a row of C-4 strapped to his waist. His eyes were utterly unhinged. "Tanur threatened me. If I fail, I'm a dead man anyway! So why shouldn't I take a few of you with me?!"
A smile that was equal parts despair and madness contorted Yale's face. His thumb hovered over the detonator as his eyes locked dead onto Loyce. "Let me and Luna walk! Right now! Or else—"
He swept his gaze around the room, taking in the black-clad guards, Loyce, and the dark recesses of the cavern.
"Boom! We all go straight to hell! The legendary X and all your loyal attack dogs can burn with me! Worth it! Hahahaha!"
He threw his head back and roared with laughter. The hysterical sound echoed wildly through the mine.
He knew there was no way out once his cover was blown. Tanur's threat still rang in his ears. Dead either way, dragging Loyce and the X Syndicate—the ones who ruined everything—down with him felt like the ultimate victory in his twisted mind.
Hidden in an adjacent cavern, Lucian's eyes were dark and cold. He glanced back and asked quietly, "Is it done?"
Standing over the unconscious bodies of Luna and Channing were top-tier domestic surgeons and pharmacists from CoreWell Pharmacy.
"Operations like this are usually done by the boss herself," Hugo replied. "Even for the best surgeons, performing a neural-link chip implant without specialized experience, especially in a filthy place like this, is extremely difficult. We need a little more time."
Lucian pondered for a second. "I'll go buy us time."
Leaning heavily on his cane, he stepped out of the shadows and locked eyes with Yale. "If you have a problem, take it up with me. Leave the others out of it."
Seeing him, Yale barked out two sharp laughs and began a slow clap. "Lucian! The smartest thing you ever did in your life was find such a powerful, omnipotent woman to back you up! Otherwise, I would have killed you a thousand times over!"
"I never once doubted you." Lucian's face was completely devoid of emotion. "You were my greatest mentor. Why did you turn into this?"
"Because my wife died!" Yale roared, his eyes turning bloodshot. "What good was serving in the military?! If you aren't a politician, you just live off a miserable salary! I couldn't afford her medical bills! And even when I scraped the money together, we were pushed to the bottom of the transplant list because some politicians had priority! It was too late! It was all because I didn't have money and power!"
Believing the livestream was still running, Yale screamed at the cavern ceiling. "You bastards! You forced me to do this! If my wife hadn't died, I never would have gone down this path!"
