Isabelle woke up the next morning.
Damian was outside her room talking to a doctor.
“You’re awake,” Damian said as he came in, holding a bag of breakfast. “Are you in any pain?”
“No,” Isabelle replied softly.
She wasn’t in pain, but fear still gripped her heart.
“Hold me.” She slowly sat up, her eyes filling with tears, and reached out for him.
Damian sat on the edge of the bed, his heart aching as he pulled her into his arms.
Isabelle buried her face against him, as if that was the only way to feel safe again.
His embrace was warm, slowly chasing away the chill that had settled in her bones.
“You were really scared,” Damian murmured, holding her tight. He stroked her hair and kissed the top of her head.
“Is the baby okay?” she asked.
“The baby’s fine.” He gently squeezed her waist.
Then Isabelle pulled back. “What about Bruce? Is he all right?”
Damian paused. “He’s still unconscious.”
It was a mild concussion-nothing serious. They were just waiting for him to wake up.
Isabelle said, “I want to see him…”

Damian stopped her. “Don’t move around just yet. The doctor said he’s fine. Rest now. I’ll take you to see him when he wakes up.”
“Okay…” Isabelle relaxed a little.
As long as he’s alive. That’s what matters.
She hugged Damian again and closed her eyes.
In the moment of impact, her mind had gone blank. The force of the crash made her think she was going to die.
The screech of tires rang in her ears. She watched the windshield rush toward her. She closed her eyes, and her mind replayed the scene from the night before.

The sound of rubber Skidding on pavement, her phone flying from the passenger seat, the suffocating feeling of being unable to
scream…
For the first time, death felt so close to her.
“Don’t be scared. I’m here.” Damian held her trembling body tighter.
His grip was firm, full of worry.
When he got Wilbur’s call, his legs had nearly given out. Even sitting in the passenger seat on the way to the hospital, he could almost feel the same terror Isabelle must have felt in that same spot.
His hands wouldn’t stop shaking.
Thankfully, they were both going to be okay, though they needed to stay for observation.
Bruce’s condition was more serious. He still hadn’t woken up and would probably be in the hospital longer.
Damian held her until she finally calmed down, then brought out the breakfast he’d brought.
“Eat something. I’ll go check on Bruce,” he said.
“Okay.” Isabelle nodded.
Damian stepped out and took a call.
“Is she dead?” Damian asked.
“She’s dead. But it wasn’t our people,” the man on the other end said.
“Who was it?”
“Don’t know.”
Damian hung up, stuck his hands in his pockets, and sank into thought for a moment before heading to Bruce’s room.
Bruce was awake. James was nearby, watching him eat breakfast.
His head was bandaged, but he looked alert.
“Does it hurt?” Damian asked.
“Yeah,” Bruce said with a grin. “But more pay would make it hurt less.”
Damian smiled. He was about to ask something else when a doctor called him out into the hall.
“Are you Bruce’s guardian?” the doctor asked.
Damian nodded. “Yes.”
The doctor nodded and led him to an office.
Bruce’s family had been taken from him long ago in the war. Damian was the one who brought him back.
