Who goes from executive assistant to a clerk in Facilities? What company calls that a normal transfer?
“I don’t buy it.” Lara turned toward Harrison, but everyone could tell her question was really meant for Lance.
Harrison gave Lara a pleading look, then turned to Lance. “Lance, my wife speaks her mind. She likes Catherine a lot. Please don’t take offense.”
Lance just stood there, cool as ever. “I don’t.”
Likes Catherine? Adelina’s smile was about to crack. She had gotten up early, fixed her makeup, and dragged herself to the airport just to pick up this woman who had made her life miserable in the tabloids. And what was the first thing out of Lara’s mouth? “Where’s Catherine?” Adelina had almost lost it right then. She’d plastered on a smile the whole car ride, patience running out, and now, of course, Catherine had shown up at the office. Catherine must have done this on purpose, making sure Lara would see her.
“Lara, she’s just an employee. And don’t forget, she tried to come between us once. Let’s not waste time on her. Come on, let’s go.”
Adelina stepped forward and hooked her arm through Lara’s, trying to lead her away.
But Lara wouldn’t budge. “What is that supposed to mean? I’m the one who screwed up and made things awkward between us with those interviews. How is she the one who ruined your relationship?”
People from the secretarial department kept passing by, sneaking glances at the scene.
Harrison moved closer and spoke softly. “Let’s talk inside, okay? Don’t keep Lance waiting. We’re guests, Lara. Please.”
“When did I not listen?” Lara shrugged Harrison off. “Honestly, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have come to Cabinda at all. And now look—everyone’s happy except Catherine, who gets demoted. How is that fair?”
Lara’s voice carried. A few people stopped at the door, openly watching.
